Hello Hamish. I get it for the final, & semi-final to a lesser extent, but do you know why the secondary cup competition early rounds are given weekend fixture status in August & September. Is it to give teams in Europe the possibility of an “easier” fixture in between important European fixtures. Seems odd to me to shove several league games into winter midweek nights while giving priority to the League Cup.
Talking point idea:
What about starting the season a couple of weeks earlier? That way we would be fitter and more prepared for the Champions League qualifiers, with the added benefit of knowing more about what we need to address in the squad before the transfer window shuts. We often get dumped out by teams who are already well into their domestic seasons (i.e. Kairat) and it seems to have benefited the Irish teams in Europe. 🍀
