Today marks exactly ten years since Croatia’s generation 1998 defeated Germany and made history with the nation’s best-ever U17 World Cup run. That team will always hold a special place in my heart — they inspired me to pursue a career in the football industry and dedicate myself to founding a non-profit organization to help young players realize their dreams.
There were so many bittersweet moments back in 2015… Moro missed a penalty in the Euro quarterfinal but later scored the winning goal past Donnarumma in the play-off. On the left flank, the duo of Brekalo and Sosa tore through every defense they faced. Soldo and Kalaica were so cohesive at the back that even Osimhen and Pulišić struggled to break through. Šemper delivered a world-class performance against Germany. Đira fought hard and fearlessly despite being the youngest in the squad. Ivanušec was involved in two goals against the U.S. and quickly established himself as a solid starter in the U17 national team. Borovec and Majer suffered serious injuries and missed the tournaments… They played against some of the best talents like Mbappe, Donnarumma, Olmo, Osimhen, Pulišić, Leão, Lookman, Marcus Thuram, Dalot, Locatelli…
A decade later, their paths have taken different directions. Some now play in the world’s top leagues, fulfilling the dreams they once chased as teenagers. Others have stepped away from professional football, finding new purposes and joys in life beyond the pitch. That’s how football — and life — often goes. Not everyone gets to live out their childhood dreams, but that doesn’t mean their stories ended in failure. Whether they’re celebrated professionals or ordinary people pursuing happiness elsewhere, I find comfort in knowing they once shared that same journey, that same passion. And as long as they’re happy — wherever life has taken them — that, to me, means they’ve succeeded.
