It seems to be, as you say, story based on story. I believed them, myself, from back, maybe it was 1956. News story was that Tim Moore returned home one night after his in-laws had enjoyed a roast beef dinner with his wife. Hungry for some himself, he found the guests had devoured it all. Enraged, Mr. Moore drew a gun and shot a few holes in a bureau. He was reported to have said that he knew he couldn't hit them. In my mind, that meant knew how to punch and the impression grew as I grew up. About this time, Sammy Davis ended a performance on Ed Sullivan by telling the audience that he was on his way to Kingfish's for some roast beef. Stories grow. One that deserves to grow is the comedy — the "smart" word would be satire — of Kingfish and everyone else on Amos 'n Andy, my all time favorite television show.
