  1. For all of you youngsters reading these messages. This was a period when 10+ teams each year really felt they had an equal chance of winning the league and possibly the FA Cup. Leeds, Liverpool, Everton, Derby County, Arsenal, Man City, Man Utd and Chelsea. All these teams had amazing players and great managers. Even teams not mentioned like Moore, Peters and Hurst’s West Ham, Malcom McDonald’s Newcastle and Queens Park Rangers’ greats: Venables, Marsh, Parkes and Gerry Francis. There were no easy games. Pitches looked like rain-soaked mud-pit Glastonbury festival weekends, for two thirds of the season each year. It was a great heavily contested era for the sport. The English top division had great players in all teams. The talent went deep.

West Germany, Holland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Scotland and Yugoslavia had two or 3 really big teams in their league unlike the English top tier. If the same qualification for the champions league happened back then in the 70s with the top 4 gaining entry instead of just the league winners. I think of that era only Cruyff’s Ajax, Beckenbauer’s Bayern Munich and possibly Stein’s Celtic would occasionally get close to those above named clubs.

I still do not understand though, how with all of the great English world class players available, why England failed to qualify for two World Cups in the 70s?

  2. Well according to the idiot who cherry picked the tackles, it was one way fouling. I saw the game live and it was more like half and half. Both teams tackled abysmally. Great game though.

  3. The Dirtiest INTERNATIONAL Game was the Battle Of Santiago
    ITALY v CHILE 1962
It is in Black and White but ignore that
    VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED

  4. And nobody was rolling around as tho they had been shot, proper men, and those studs were made of aluminium, the ground was heavy and these twp teams played for 120 minutes, and I can rememeber these times and games, and a week later the same players played, no injury crisis back then.

  5. Leeeds United were one of the best teams at the time but also arguably the dirtiest. They used to bully and try to intimidate rivals but Chelsea were as hard as nails and never backed down. Both teams had their share of near psychopaths. Leeds had Bremner, Giles, Hunter and Charlton but Chelsea had Harris, Osgood, Webb and Hutchinson and I really enjoyed games between the two sides

  6. Dreams are nothing more than wishes
And a wish is just a dream you wish to come true.

If only I could have a puppy, I'd call myself so very lucky
Just to have some company to share a cup of tea with me
I'd take my puppy everywhere, la la la la da, I wouldn't care
But we would stay away from crowds with signs that said : 'No dogs allowed'.

Oh wee, I know he'd never bite me, oh no
Wee, I know he'd never bite me.

If only I could have a friend who'd stick with me until the end
To walk along beside the sea and share a bit of moon with me
I'd take my friend most everywhere, la la la la la, I wouldn't care
But we would stay away from crowds with signs that said : 'No friends allowed'.

And oh wee (we'd be so happy to be)
(Wee, we'd be so happy to be together).

But dreams are nothing more than wishes
And a wish is just a dream you wish to come true.

Dreams are nothing more than wishes
And a wish is just a dream you wish to come true.

Dreams are nothing more than wishes
And a wish is just a dream you wish to come true.

  7. Ive been watching Chelsea since 1955 and was present both of these games. The first match was good but the second was the most exciting I’ve seen in nearly 70 years. People understandably focus on the brutality but the standout moment for me was the sublime pass from Charlie Cooke that led to the brilliant headed goal by Peter Osgood. Such brilliance amongst so much brutality. It was a real grudge match and afterwards I saw tough looking Leeds supporters literally crying. Even today there is still a grudge element when the teams meet. Despite all the success of Chelsea in recent years Osgood’s equalising goal in that second match ( which meant he scored jn every round of the cup competition that year) is the greatest moment I’ve had in 69 years supporting Chelsea.
“ Come kn you Blues “.

  8. I wonder what the youngsters of today thought about the last line when the video ended? “It was the only live game shown that season 1969/70”! Nowadays there’s 10 live games every week.

  9. Very biased depiction of the match. Leed's tackling was really dirty as well….but you edited that out of the video.
    Btw..l don't support Chelsea.
