Good for some. Too much equipment required to have fun. I'll take a surfboard.
I am completely on the opposite end of the spectrum: 60+ years old, just stepping on when it's between 8 and 12 MPH wind, sailing along ON the surface, trying (and mostly succeeding) to NOT fall in, going from place to place and nearby islands at a moderate, pleasant place, and having a GREAT time with the elements and enjoying the sights. No accidents or hospitalizations in over 15 years. AND I AGREE: Windsurfing IS a BEAUTIFUL SPORT. I'm loving it for 25 years now.

Much better than anything done recently on windsurfing: it shows every stage of the practice: spot placement, jumping, surfing, recovering from loss of gears, quick restart after small failure, speed taking. As close as reality as one can get: Truly amazing work!

Without taking anything from Kitesurfing , it doesn't handle a candle to windsurfing
Extreme water sports in general have been underrated and misunderstood. They require not only super high athletic skills, incredible focus and concentration but also a hyper accurate sense and capacity to feel and anticipate the natural environment around the athlete. There are no identical two waves, and mastering perfectly the combinations of the angle and the speed at which you hit a wave makes the difference between and near-drowning wipe out and a fantastic and spectacular figure/jump. Wind is not always steady, it can be gusty, that also adds a major parameter on the environmental “dashboard”.
What a beautiful place to live and windsurf! My sports medicine practice is based in acupuncture and chiropractic methodologies. If I could easily bring my Macaws and dog here to live, all bags would be packed and we would arrive ASAP! It would be awesome to help keep these amazing athletes pain free and have the perfect humidity for the birds!

I don’t believe it is under rated. It is just too hard core and difficult. I am a kite, foiled and winger. Way easier and lot less painful if you land incorrect. I have always admired windsurfing but learning curve is steep and to get to the level of the guys in this video takes many more years than kiting or winging

Looks like Pozo, Gran Canaria. I windsurfed there back in 1996, great spot. I'm not as fit today unfortunately, so I wouldn't go out there today unless I practiced hard in not as challenging conditions…
