  1. I think the important thing is the context. In your story the other opponent had no catch wrestling techniques. Although I think when you have size and technique, if your technique is close to even the size becomes an advantage.

  2. this is what casuals misinterpret about combat sports… size DOES matter, when EVENLY SKILLED. so when people go "but weight classes" its because in a competitive environment, players are supposed to be very similarly skilled, and thus come the weight advantage.

  3. What about being tall? I noticed in the first clip the skinny guy was a bit taller than the short, bulky guy. What advantage/disadvantage does height play in Catch? I'm thinking that shorter/stumpier builds may be harder to submit, but having longer, leaner limbs may make it easier to control subs, so maybe there's an even trade off? (Sorry for the noob question)

  4. The first match was great. I think the smaller guy could of easily went to a full on rear naked and could have ended it early but he went for a banana split instead which is a good thing to me. In the second match it seemed that the winner seem to use amateur wrestling more than anything to manhandle the snake pit guy.

  5. Best way to identify casuals… They think strength and size never/always matter. It depends.

Thinking in absolutes is a sign that somebody needs to adjust their thinking.

  6. is the rear naked choke from a backmount forbidden in those catch turnaments, or do they just avoid it even though the opportunity presents its self, because people nowadays will associate it with bjj and will not get what catch is when they see the same choke they see in bjj all the time ?

  7. Something no one likes to admit is that if someone is the same exact skill level that whoever is bigger in the match will most likely win. How likely is it, say, that a 80lb 11yo with 7years of experience could beat up a 200lb 30yr old with nothing but jogging and weight lifting experience? If size didn't matter then that would happen a lot. But I'm pretty damn sure that it's just not physically possible.

  8. Jeez, what is up with these comments. This video was clearly explaining that skill can make up for size and even had clear examples. What is so hard to understand about that? Mismatch sizes of competitors is also common in Muay Thai, but Catch Wrestling has an extremely small pool of competitors compared to any other sport. So of course mismatched weights will be common, and it wont matter at all as it just means that the best wrestler will win overall which is how all combat sports were before weight classes were invented.

  9. I mean… I wreslted a guy 190lb solid muscle and he knew basic wrestling and with that was enough to out muscle me i was 40lbs lighter and that's so hard for me to admit. At the same time, 200lb+ guys and even bigger that didn't know any wrestling or little wrestling, I've dominated. So strength is needed if you assume your opponent knows everything you do.

  10. Farmer Burns weighed around 170, regularly beat bigger guys.

Karl Gotch cited conditioning as the foundation. Then technique and leverage.

As stated by others below, when two men are evenly matched, size can make a difference…but conditiining more often than not is a bigger deciding factor.

  11. Size matters, much like strength, conditioning, technique and experience. These are all attributes we use in the heat of combat. The victor is the one who uses all these advantages to the best extent.

  12. what the f*** is this idiot talking about white mix a bunch of difference that's why there's f**** weight divisions and every combat sport you dumb fuck. Technique is not the champion. You put a gazelle against a rhino and that gazelle ain't going to do a goddamn thing against that rhino I don't care how much technique it has.
