  1. It is incredibly difficult to accept a place in the back and continue to run at your pace when it appears the gap may be getting too large to overcome. Dave ran a perfect race and only led the race for one stride. Very disciplined run and one not many are capable of. The desire to stay near the front is overwhelming especially in a short race. You will be hard pressed to find many high level 800 meter runs where such a substantial lead is overcome.

  2. I watched this race live on TV while it happened. What made it so exciting is that the semi-final race followed the exact same pattern as this one — Wottle was way behind early in the race and stormed all the way back to win. So to watch him do this not once, but TWICE, was truly amazing!
The commentators on ABC Sports knew what was going to happen — as the runners made the final turn and headed down the home stretch, I recall they exclaimed: "Watch out!
    WATCH OUT!!"

  3. Everything about this race is iconic: Dave’s hat of course; his last-place start; his steady move towards the front; his kick; his win; his humility. Nothing to dislike and everything to respect. Well done, Dave. Thank you.

  4. Most analyze this race wrong, even though the answer is pretty well known. Dave's laps were incredibly consistent. He didn't start out slow. He didn't sprint from behind (though of course it looks like he did). He simply ran HIS race and everyone came back to him.

  5. Any sport enthusiast from the baby boomer era recognizes Dave Wottle’s name!!! There are a handful of famous distance runners whose names are instantly recognizable. Another is Billy Mills!

  6. "I was an underdog my whole career — but something inside me told me that I can hold my own with these guys."

NEVER GIVE UP BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!!!!

  7. Playing this without the audio from the commentator is such a let down. It's one of the best ever. "Here come the Kenyans…AND HERE COMES WOTTLE!"
