  1. Rules need to be put in place for this it should not be allowed it doesn’t matter about family background or what family members are from. Once a player plays for an international club that’s it he’s there for his career end of. This is why there is so much corruption in football. The game is ruined

  3. A lot of people do this, when you have roots in a weaker country, you obviously play for them since theres a higher chance of getting into the national team. But when they get good and they see a chance of playing for a better nation and being famous, you obviously choose to play for a better team.

  4. He was born in London, he’s English, why would we play for Ireland if he could play for England where he actually came from

  5. Ok to solve all the arguing in the comments section hopefully, while it is true that rice used Ireland as a stepping stone for his greater ambitions in football the only reason he had any eligibility is that he had Irish in his blood from two generations earlier. And while the move was considered a scandal it was only natural that since England, a bigger national team at the time saw this promising youngster (as well as not being able to help getting one over on their western neighbours) decided to ask rice to play for England and he did. There was no malice, no vendettas just a simple move due to changed interest. I’m saying this as an Irish person.
