Go check in any interview, and you can discover that Unai had TWO FULL SEASONS to observe Pepe play in Ligue 1 when he was manager at PSG..
He absolutely did not want him. He could tell, just as anyone else watching, that he was a one-trick-pony.. a quick counter attack running at a single defender 1v1.. and scoring with his left, having come from the right side of the pitch.. That is all he did at Lille.. he was efficient for only one and a half seasons.. Played well to avoid a relegation struggle in his 1st and then scored well in the second to help demolish(one match only)Emery's PSG.. who still won the Ligue 1 and all the other cups.. except for the ever fleeing CL..
So that is why Emery left PSG..(or they only offered him the sack..!)

Do the Athletic do any research before recording? Emery very pointedly DID NOT WANT Pepe, he wanted Wilfried Zaha, but Raul Sanllehi went ahead with the Pepe signing and it's wildly inflated transfer fee (including MASSIVE agents fees) preceeding Raul's forced exit months later. And whatever Pepe felt, he lost Arteta because he never did any work off the ball, particularly in defence.
