It's likely due to fustration with his performance and how his body is changing. Like being demoted to PSV and his height and big head is not helping him, he is obviously struggling to keep up and sometimes to perform the basics of his position.
I believe the English speaking (not just American) media overhyped him and this is his real level. He had a stint in a seriously bad Barcelona lineup, then another in a decent Milan where he was the weakest link, and now found a home in PSV where he is merely one of many mediocre players.
No wonder why so many ex retired US national team players have refused to keep supporting the national team because of these childish players who are supposed to show tgey wanna be in the national team but have refused to play descent but you rather play like children and not deserve to be in the team anymore
