Here's my assessment of the game.

West Ham were pretty much a sum of their parts on the day. They were everything I assessed them to be the second the window closed. Good goalkeeper (told you we didn't need an upgrade). Good quality defence (told you we had enough quality to play as a back 4 and not HAVE to play a back 5). A competent enough (still not enamoured with it) midfield who, though there is technical quality in there, still lacks physicality. Didn't help having to take Fernandes out of it to make up for the loss of Summerville, and a weak front line; low on both quality and depth.

In that frontline, you had Fernandes, who is an 8, Free agent, Callum Wilson and Bowen. Liverpool left a player the level of Salah on the bench through choice and rotated between their 150 million pound CF and their 80 million pound CF in game. That's the difference.

I thought the team played o.k. I think we had our own spells of pressure, they just result in very little. Could imagine the difference a Promise David would have made on the day. Or/And a fit Summerville.

From back to front, I think Areola (pretty much, as usual) had a good game, the back 4 looked good, the midfield looked O.K. but, like I said, lacks physicality. I thought Magassa looked good. And the frontline was pretty toothless. Very toothless tbh. Bowen barely created anything for himself, and the other two, less than him.

Regarding the Paqueta incident; he was stupid. I was angry at him. That went on way too long to not be stopped. Paqueta needs to take the blame, but I can not get away from the fact I was staring at my TV watching Bowen to allow it to all unfold without saying a word. Disappointing from both. If I was Nuno, I would use that situation as a way to address both. Both extremely important and high status players for us.

Regarding Nuno's performance as a manager, I thought he got the 11 pretty much bang on. Again, from front to back, Areola is now a shoe in. I wasn't as big an advocate for dropping Kilman as others, I was more advocating for the CBs to play on their strong foot, so if Kilman is going to get back into this side, it's for Todibo, in my opinion. Mav looking like a nailed on starter. Kilman may have to be seen as the man you bring on to close up a game or first choice cover.

The midfield was as expected, as was the frontline. Think Paqueta on the left and Fernandes in MF looked better than vica verca. I think Nuno is heading in the right direction. I don't get this narrative of how he “bottled it” when he started in a 4-3-3, which is an attacking formation, and his subs were bringing on a winger in Guilherme, a CF in Fullkrug, and then trying to use Souceck as another focal point up top.

Moving forward, the return of Summerville means those midfielders are competing for their spots after the Man United game (barring further suspensions and injuries — those being Paqueta, Fernandes, Potts and Magassa (who I thought looked good). Summerville missing has pointed out that LW depth is an issue, as I said it was in the summer. I would have been willing to overlook it more until the summer if Summerville stayed fit, but he hasn’t and it effects the team too much when we don't have that profile of player available to us (a right footed, naturally left sided winger), and the need for a mobile target man is still as clear as day.

All problems I knew about this side the second the window closed and was stressing all summer, so I'm not surprised.

Touching again on the Paqueta situation, I think Nuno needs to talk to Paqueta AND Bowen regarding that incident. Paqueta was stupid and Bowen was weak. Both need to look at themselves. More so Paqueta, but if there was any more obvious evident that Bowen needed to look at regarding leadership, and people having questioned it in the pass, it's that incident.

We go again.

Thought Magassa looked good. Needed that physicality in midfield. Hope he uses as a platform to grow from and hope they look at Kante in the youth team and start looking at him more as a viable option, because I think that midfield lacks that. Legs and physicality.

Anyway. That's my take on the game and direction we should be heading in.

Paqueta should be benched cuz that's not how you should react as a football player. Even though it might have been a bet or other things…. Just don't let the player play who keeps risking his team for loss.
