  1. Thanks for breaking things down so clearly. I love watching our team but have limited knowledge about the tactics of soccer. Your analysis on your channel helps me enjoy the game more.

  2. It's simple. Put Gio in the middle and let him do his thing. Same goes for McKennie and Pulisic and all the other skilled players we have. Put them in, let them do what they do best…dribble and create in space or create their own space. I am not saying tactics aren't important, but sometimes overthinking a "game plan" can lead good players to play tight trying to honor the "game plan". I think the coach really just needs to field the right roster and start/sub players in the spots they flourish at, which I wanna believe (but not sold) our coach will do.

  3. How much of it is also bringing the wrong players? Even if you get your tactics right if you put people like Lleget, Roldon and Ariola out on the pitch to support Zardes as your 9, your screwed.

  4. That was a really great video, Pete—really good breakdown of our tactics and focus on what we need to improve.
Also I just noticed, congrats on 11K subscribers!

  5. The final Rd of WCQ is going to be about can the USMNT play tough hard-nose football to finish Top3. Time to feel the pressure and let it push us to perform.

  6. Love technical analysis videos gotta be my favorite ones they're very interesting n I'm trying to learn more about how soccer is played I would sub to the Patreon if i wasn't unemployed rn fire content

  7. I should point out that, as long as we beat Panama, which we really should do considering how well we play at home, USA will clinch at least the playoff. I’m pretty sure the playoff will still be easy passage to Qatar, as I think we will be far superior to New Zealand or any OFC minnows who might upset them. That being said, it is much better to qualify directly and try scheduling friendliest against tougher opponents to beef up our ranking score.

  8. Great stuff again Pete! Not that it validates Christians body language or efforts at times in games. But it’s clear he’s frustrated that guys are not making the correct final ball, the most direct ball, the best d3cison. The aaronson play, weah not tapping it to him vs Canada for a tap in. Some of that is player choice like w3ah and some are from Greg drilling into them that wider is the best option. He truly is the one holding back this squad. He has to allow Christian, McKennie and Reyna when he gets back an autonomy on the field to make those choices as they flow in the game. He also needs to bring back the players of high soccer IQ and who possess poise and technique and end product even if they aren’t his bffs. Brooks and Sargent are two important cogs we desperately missed especially against Canada. Sargent will show why dean rates him as their best striking option right now at Norwich and brooks and de la torre need to be in the lineup against Mexico as well. Brooks is great with his feet and is the only CB we got that can thread some line breakers and could work well with Luca who can cut open Mexico in the counter. You know they aren’t gonna sit back and let us dominate possession. They don’t have the quality in the midfield and up front as y3ars past.

  9. Our attacking over the GGG era has been abysmal. People can point to the highest goals per game stat as much as they want but if you know ball that is an inflated stat from playing very poor teams. Your first point is perfect we’ve given away so many opportunities through the middle to force it wide to put in a subpar cross over and over again. Where it’s obvious we don’t have the wing play to play like that. You said other teams would have a 100 page dossier ( I know that’s hyperbole but it’s true) against us. But they only need 2 bullet points. 1) give a half hearted press and force them outside 2) overload the crossers when it’s played. That’s it. Against good teams we will get flustered because we’re young and we will keep forcing this offense because as we’ve shown GGG is not willing to deviate from this plan. If we want to complete at a world stage GGG has to go or he needs to accept and adopt new forms of attack. Which he’s shown he can’t or isn’t willing to do. I think we’ll qualify but I’m still scarred from couva and I’m honestly nervous we’ll be in the playoff spot and then who knows what could happen. We should win but again I don’t want 1 game to decide our fate from an obvious tactical ineptitude from GGG

  10. I was watching the Milan derby over the weekend and i thought the way inter played was what ggg wants the US to play like. Thought it was an interesting comparison

  11. Pete, I think you hit on the two biggest ones for Qatar. The one minor point I will make is that GGG will have his own 100-page dossier filled with PowerPoint slides, Excel worksheets and maybe an Access database on all 3 of our opponents. If, after reading that, he can't see the need to change things up (or at least spend a month working on crossing from the flank) then queue Gizmo's "3 and Out" ode to Qatar 2022.

The other big one I would add is set piece delivery. I honestly don't care who takes them, but we will need a set piece goal or two to advance out of group stage. May as well start working on that now.

Finally, while I think we have the players, we haven't had them work together enough. I will use Richards as my example. He is a talented player, but desperately needs more time with Zimm and Miles as his partner. Brooks and/or CCV too should Gregg finally come to his senses. If not in qualifiers, then certainly friendlies and the NL group stage games in June. I'd like to see Gregg name a 40-man preliminary roster around the time the WC draw occurs, then gradually winnow that down through the spring/summer to 23.

  12. Robinson is a pretty good crosser, I'm not sure you're giving him enough credit. Maybe I'm wrong lol, who knows.

  13. So good totally agree the team is not built to attack from the outside in. Robinson and dest are players that like to dive inside.

  14. The entire point of pushing it out wide is to create space in the middle. If you don't take advantage of that space in the middle when it's there, then you're just playing keep-away. I totally agree with your assessment.

  15. Nice job with the video Pete, as usual! I really like the shorter format for a lot of these. And nice job with wearing the same sweatshirt in the video as the in ad. I wasn't sure how far to forward through the video. 😂

  16. CP10 made the bad run, not Zardes. He closed down space forcing the ball wide. I seriously doubt opposing teams will have much prior knowledge of our tactics and tendencies, or even have much knowledge of our player pool beyond Pulisic. We should not go regressive and play conservatively. This is what we've wanted for decades, and to go backwards to bunker ball would be reversing the evolution of the team.

  17. Hey Pete, pretty sure we only need 3 points to clinch Qatar, as long as those 3 points come against Panama. That would make it impossible for them to catch us by my calculations. Would put us on 24 points and give them a max of 23 points even with two more wins.

  18. I'm on board, but… How do you just switch or add to your tactics and see positive outcomes. Or do you figure that because these guys are professionals that they should be able to do it? But yes, I agree we must have more than a single style / tactical way of playing.

Hey Pete, really like the analysis. As you’ve got a large audience of soccer fans here perhaps you can explain (if you haven’t already), how tactical periodization fits into personnel and tactical decisions in light of the very compressed WCQ windows and a big chunk of the guys traveling 6+ time zones just to get into camp 3 days before match 1?

  20. We'd be better off with a better coach instead of trying to fix the guy we have. Coaches aren't usually the type of people that like to change.

  21. The issue is a combination of player pool at tactics, but many that Gregg doesn't seem to know/want to adjust his tactics based on the players he has available.

  22. If we had a player like Latin who is killer as a center forward then this strat berhalter employs is so much better. Unfortunately we don't have a center forward with the nose for goal except maybe Pepi but Pepi is struggling with form at the moment.

  23. We only need to beat Panama. Beat New Zealand in a wild card games. USA can even loose to both Mexico and Costa Rica!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Bobby wood is the player missing in the usmnt. He is a pure striker and a destroyer in the box. Imagina delatorre and Reyna feeding Bobby wood in the box.
