  1. Normally when they say it's not last man because 'there was a defender covering', there's also a keeper in the goal. If you're stopped going one on one with the keeper, that's denying a definite goal scoring opportunity. But in this scenario, even though he's going one on one with a defender for an open goal, it's not a definite goal scoring opportunity? Terrible call. Although, Gabriel not being sent off vs.man city was equally terrible.

  2. They do that only against arsenal, but if it were city everyone would have been over their heads by now. And it still matters. Officials should be investigated and punished after such decisions.

  3. It's not just Arsenal.. BUT, it's a serious question – how can these ref's & VAR be so bad & make so many bad decisions…

  4. It does matter. Firstly if he doesn't foul Gyokeres could score. He had an empty net and maybe a defender to beat that cannot use his hands.

If Pope gets sent off maybe we score a few more goals and improve our goal difference. If we lose the Title because our points and gd is the same then you won't be saying we won and this didn't matter.

  5. Such a valid point here!! The VAR and PGMOL are absolute joke! That is a red card regardless of which team, if that was against Arsenal, I would be saying, “we got away with the that”

  6. It is not a clear red card as you think. Check the rules. All fouls by a keeper outside the box are not by default a red card.

  7. Probably right but then you could say the same for Gabriel Magalhães he should have been red carded. Just thank the lord that weren’t the case cos you defo can’t afford to loose gabs in this crucial part of the season.

  8. When Arsenal play a game we're not jus playing against the other team, we're playing against the referee, the 2 lines man + the 3 VAR so it's 17 v 11 when Arsenal play which is totally unfair 😢

  9. You won … but it does matter… these are the things that can’t be acceptable, especially in a title race so close. Regardless of the result this should have as much noise as Luis Diaz against Tottenham offside call. I get you in that the 3 points secure, but this is a dreadful decision that every team should be looking at and going we could be next. I’m LFC and wish you good luck in these last few games. Hopefully you won’t have a league stripped away because of a handball or nonsense like this decision! I know that feeling! 😫

  10. The fact we won is irrelevant the PGMOL are an absolute disgrace and the excuses they come out with are laughable at best. Joke of an organisation!!

  11. Gyokores is the worst player I see in arsenal. Aside this one, a counter attack ball was launched to him by Hincape and saka and matinelli were there waiting and he missed the pass. It was not different from the goal matinelli and dorman score. For this scenario it's a clear red card and a goal definitely.

  12. It is what it is as an Arsenal fan just take it on the chin we were lucky the other week when Gabriel should have seen a red for trying to head but haaland

  13. Clear red, and worse, we're in a situation where goal difference may decide the title. So a red card at this point would give roughly 20 minutes of 11 on 10 to try and score more — and with a forced-sub backup keeper at that.

  14. If you look at it from the front you will see that gyokores had an open net to shoot into if he wasn't brought down, there are slim to no chance of Malik intercepting that ball

  15. Excellent use words to describe the absolute HORRENDOUS stinking performance of the officials. That being said, Howe gets away with so many terrible decisions all the time against Arsenal.

Probably the worst performing coach nobody ever talks about. Heavily backed financially, and still totally underachieving. Can you imagine what Nuno Espírito Santo, DeZerbi, Iraola, Da Silva… just to mention a few, would do with this Newcastle squad!

At least Arsenal won. But that decision could have swung the whole game to be many goals for Arsenal.

  16. Former referee here. If you’ve watched football for any length of time and can’t figure out why this isn’t a red card, I don’t think you’d pass the entry level referee test. This decision is not hard to understand.

There are four elements to DOGSO decisions. They are 1) direction of play 2) distance to goal 3) distance to ball 4) number of defenders.

Note that these same variables are also applied to cynical fouls (tactical fouls or whatever you want to call them). Last time I officiated those are called SPA fouls (stopping a promising attack).
    Let’s analyze each criteria.

    1) Direction of play is towards the touchline, not the goal. That’s a negative.

    2) Distance to goal is pretty far. That’s also a negative.

    3) Distance to ball. Even if we assume Gyokeres is not fouled, maintaining possession is not certain. Gyokeres is also not the best at retaining possession.

    4) Number of defenders. Assuming Gyokeres isn’t fouled, there is a covering defender that Gyokeres either has to beat or make a long range shot at a difficult angle.

Assuming that the covering defender isn’t the best reason to not give a red card, all of the other elements to consider in DOGSO situations don’t strengthen the justification to give a red card for DOGSO.

  17. Take the win and move on. A lot of team suffers the same faith against Arsenal. Referees need consistency, but this one could have gone both ways

  18. Also, now the defender takes the position of a goalkeeper in that sequence. So the defender is not technically the last player. Football rules are so complicated. Definitely a red card

  19. Haven’t you worked it out yet?

We live I a corrupt world, and football is not exempt of that. There is too much money in the game for the media companies not to apply “significant influence” on “their product”.

David Dean created a monster 👺
