The referee did not give a penalty in the El Clásico involving Aurélien Tchouaméni because in that moment the decision comes down to how the handball rule is interpreted in real time the ball was struck from very close range so the referee judged that Tchouaméni did not have enough time to react and his arm position was considered natural rather than deliberately making his body bigger which is an important factor in deciding handball situations the laws of the game do not punish every contact with the hand especially when it is accidental and happens at high speed and from short distance and since the referee saw it live and did not consider it a clear offense the VAR could only intervene if there was a clear and obvious error but because the situation was subjective and open to interpretation VAR supported the original decision so overall the combination of close distance natural arm position lack of intent and no obvious mistake is why no penalty was given (0 ball knowledge
