  1. Perry sensei. I have known of you over the years and we have had a few discussions. You were rather Gruff at the time. But watching this 30 minutes I have learned so much about you and your spirit. It's an honor to know you and you have really inspired me. I will be talking to Mr. Williams. Thank you so much.

  3. We knew Doug and Joy Perry through church when I was a rookie officer back in ‘92-‘96 in Hendersonville, NC. Great people and he was a mentor to me in many ways. Joy Perry was a wonderful soul and the driving force behind Doug’s success and he would readily admit that. She is greatly missed.

  4. Excellent interview and a true OG Karateka warrior. I would like to meet him someday. From a Kyokushin Karate practitioner with respect to you sir!!

  5. Great video! I grew up in Okinawa and witnessed many American servicemen taking Karate lessons in the dojo when I was a child in early 70s. I was really impressed by their dedication and utmost respect to the Sensei and Okinawan culture. Later I moved to states as a military brat to Cherry Point, NC Marine Corps Air Station in mid 70s. While there I took many different martial arts class from Marines who have learned arts in Okinawa. Including Shorin ryu from sensei Bill Hayes along with Uechi Ryu from GySgt and Shotokan from MGySgt Haas. These outstanding sensei molded my teenage mind to look up at them and I wanted to be just like them. At later in Shotokan training, my mother couldn't afford to pay for the lessons anymore so I told my sensei but he simply said don't worry about it and just continue with my training. After high school, I joined Marines and I'm still practicing Karate today because of these fine men inspired me to this journey. Semper Fi. I am forever grateful to Okinawa and Marines

  6. Great interview with such special and influential people in the karate world. I am very fortunate to be able to meet and train with both.

  7. I notice a lot of Marines from the past have become high level Black Belts in Traditional Okinawan Karate. Always sharpening the mind and body into an efficient killing Machine when it is required. Semper Fi Marine!

  8. Sometimes I don't understand why people start their own style after reaching 8th Dan or 10th Dan. You should be faithful till the end to the style and Your karate master.
Had all the students of Hanshi Shugoro Nakazato stayed faithful they would have crossed 1 million karateka by now.

  9. I had the rare and distinct privilege of studying under this great man for nearly 5 years back in the early to late 80's in my hometown of Hendersonville, NC and it changed my life and personal character forever. He is truly extraordinary both inside and out. In his younger days, as both a fighter and practitioner, he was absolutely formidable (a MACHINE) but in his humility, he'll never admit it. I remember his son when he was still in junior high. It has been remarkable to see Jason follow in his Dad's footsteps in achieving greatness.

  10. Got to train with sensei Perry many years ago while in highschool was such an amazing instructor and learned so much. Proud to say he helped inspire me to join the military and i continued my training. Thank you sensei for everything you have done and all the inspiration.

  11. What a joy to hear that voice again! I trained with Hanshi Perry and Jason for several years in the late 80s when Jason was in high school. Many life lessons learned from that kind and powerful warrior…

  12. Very sincere man and description of his experience.
US military gave him opportunity .. karate sensei gave him understanding
War and Budo give him purpose.
Okinawa is truly the Garden of Eden

  13. I wonder if sensei Perry ever had the pleasure of meeting or training with Bruce Lee i know Jeet Kun Do and Karate are 2 different disciplines im still curious tho

  14. I used to date Doug when he was the Marine Recruiter in Florence, SC, in 1961! Great guy! And fabulous dancer!

  15. This man is awesome I used to see and talk to him in the late 90's early 2000 at a winter camp in Virginia. Somebody else has to remember these winter camps.

  16. Please extend my warmest greetings to Doug Perry, I am also 80 years old and began my study of karate at Minot AFB in 1962 and then two years in Okinawa at Kadena AFB.

  17. Thank you for all the positive comments. We're about to start filming Series Two, and need help from the international martial arts community to do it.
Learn how you can become a supporter or sponsor of the series in the video description.

  18. I have known Perry Sensei since 1981 when I was teaching the morning program under Hanshi Ridgely Abele. He will always be remembered as one of the. Few authentic Karate instructors in the United States. Truly a great man and great friend.
