Jonny is very correct regarding the emotional levers that the Bok players can pull in order to eek out that extra 10 % – either mentally or physically.
I recall that part of chasing the sun where Rassie breaks down in tears recounting Mapimpi’s jersey story (they had some special tradition whereby each player would put pictures of and with with their families on them – basically those who had helped you in your formative years).
Makazole’s jersey had his own picture on it, because he had no family. They’d all perished from extreme poverty and accidents before he was even a late teenager.
His teammates shared their own personal photos so he would have his family, his Bok family, on his back.
It’s a deep, deep well of emotion these men can access that isn’t quite replicated to the same degree in any other nation. Including the islanders.
Went out to SA for the British and Irish Lions of 2009. Was out there for a month for the 3 tests and to shark dive, amazing trip on and off the pitch and in the water..

🇿🇦🇿🇦 jeez guys, you make South Africa sound like a war zone. I do hope the current management is not that neurotic. My wife and I happened to once have had a drink just as the English team walked in, at the Beverly Hills Hotel (Umhlanga Rocks, Durban). Round about 2018? (I was there for the Comrades Marathon). I hope and pray the guys were at least free to take a walk along the promenade, dip in the ocean? Oh my, you miss out on a ton of stuff if you stay in a bubble the whole time. We went for a hike up Lions Head in Cape Town two weeks or so ago and it just so happens that a Springbok prop, his wife and a friend were there as well. Damn, again, please, you can't travel to this astonishingly beautiful country and lock yourself up in your hotel.
I was at Ellis Park in 2018 when Siya Kolisi ran onto the field as South Africa's captain for the first time. To be honest, I fancied England's chances that day, particularly when England took a 24-3 lead.
Looking back now, it's incredible to think about the journey South African rugby has been on since that moment. Was appointing Siya captain the most important decision of Rassie's reign?

The scores in the past often reflect the fact that when SA toured Europe, there were often several key players missing – it was often the same when some European teams came to the SH.
Luckily now, for SA, the provinces are playing in the URC and Prem etc. Seasons are similar.

They can stay scared to walk around but during the super rugby days you'd run into the NZ or Aus franchise players at clubs, the beach, your local gym even malls with no security.
England love putting fear into their own people which is cool because it makes them scared before they even come to South Africa. In all the years they've been coming down here there's been zero issues yet they remain scared, there's a reason South Africans think the English are soft and maybe that's why NZ has been so successful in South Africa, they took the fear factor out by mixing with the public and realising sure it has its bad places but the people are no different to NZ.
Really like hearing the insight from Jonny and Tins on facing the Boks – it is going to be one hell of a test for this England team

It's so interesting looking back at that 2000 series vs England. The Boks had great players but almost comically inexperienced. For the 2nd test in Bloem, the combined caps in the starting team was about 300 – half of the caps was in 3 players. Which these days would be unheard of. Oldest starting player was 29. Love these stories and memories of that time, however unstable and weird it was. Remember we also changed coach mid-year with Mallett's fallout with SA Rugby.
As a South African we are always so grateful to visiting teams who spend time with the kids in the townships. They so desperately need good male role models to look up to so thank you Eng;and lads!

As a SAFFA I dont really care about Pollock playing or not, there are 23 men in that team that need to be bested, not just one. Pollock is a distraction … our boys understand that, but given the chance I reckon he might get what we call at home a poesklap
The first win in SA by England was in the amateur days, 3 June 1972, I was there on the day, not a great birthday gift for me, lost 18-9, John Pullin was the England captain!!

Just ask Andy Farrell, Ireland have beaten the boks 6 times over the last 10 years, even with top players missing and injuries (2nd test in SA) they still came away with a win.
