That atmosphere just overwhelmed Ecuador.
Ecuador looked beaten from the kick off, they were way off it and I'd say the Azteca played a huge role. However I do think some selections were wrong. I love Enner, absolute legend (would like to see him return to Emelec now) but he shouldn't have started, he's offered nothing all tournament, Caicedo on set pieces was a disaster and they were outnumbered in midfield. Pace was needed at RB instead of Franco & Franco in midfield with Vite & Caicedo. Ordonez huge prospect at CB but can't make defensive errors like that for the 2nd goal, he'll learn from that. Disappointing night & tournament overall but congrats to Mexico!!
Another point about Ecuador which completely summed up the match for them. Corner in stoppage time 1st half, GET THE BALL IN THE BOX. You just scored a winner vs Germany from a corner, yet they play a short corner and go all the way back. Ref blows his whistle for the end of the half. It was that Bizarre it made me think possible match fixing Lol

Mr. Vickery, thank you for your coherency and reflective thought on last night's match. How much of what was displayed yesterday (beyond Beccacece's tactical miscues) also rests on the fault of some of the players. Bizarrely enough (and excluding Alan Franco who is not even a natural RB) the entire defensive unit just absolutely buckled. Moises Caicedo, Piero Hincapie, Willian Pacho, and Ordoñez just could not effectively cover their own terrain (possibly attributable to the high press), but these elite players plying their trade at some of Europe's biggest teams and with verifiable track records of consistency at the club level just looked totally out of their league. Did they quit on Beccacece to drive the final nail in the proverbial coffin? Caicedo earns the captain's arm band, but goes on to yesterday's match to be an apparition of what his true potential ceiling is. Such a precipitous drop in form can't be solely on tactics, right? In contrast to what might have been displayed in qualifiers, I saw a team that just looked aloof, uncharacteristically emotional, and technically deficient (individually and as a unit). That Hincapie red card at the end of the match seemed to encapsulate it all in a quick moment. It looked like he threw in the towel. An unceremonious and ugly way to exit the tournament. Thus closing the Beccacece chapter after a nightmarish tournament run (except for the Germany match where there was a high degree of passion and grit). I liken it to the moment where a teacher loses control of the classroom and bedlam breaks out thereafter. It felt like a symbolic moment. It seems like he lost the locker room. The big question for Ecuador is, who is next to steer this ship? The new coach will have to juggle tactical overhauls, refreshing the lines, and managing egos more than any other predecessor.
I'd like to see Ecuador build to have a genuinely competitive Copa America run. I'm sad for Beccacece.
