The most important quality for a goalkeeper should be the ability to stop goals from being conceded. Playing out the back is irrelevant if the defensive back line struggles to play out the back themselves like The US did against Japan.
Zach Steffens did not lose his job, he was injured, they have a love with Turner or Horvath, when Sean Johnson had his shut out he got very little credit. Same with Steffens after ‘dos a cero’. He got very little credit. But when Turner does anything positive, they all rally behind him. Both goals scored he should’ve blocked, at least that’s what would have been said if Steffens was in goal.
In almost every broadcast de la torre, Reyna, Aaronson and Sargent get no criticism. When they were awful. They couldn’t do anything against one of the worst defensive teams in the World Cup. But I’ve heard McKennie take criticism, dest has take criticism, Ferreira has taken criticism and of course the mls guys.
He had so many saves to be honest if usa scored this game could have gone in their favour but they just didn't threaten japan and well the defence was also falling apart towards the end he saved usa from a 4 nil or 5 nil humiliation
Matt turner playing with his feet is fine. Everyone mentions it but its progressed leaps and bounds in the last year especially if u look at arenals pre season games. Hes the best shot stopper and his awareness and decision making is way better than steffens
I hate it when pundits say X goalie "is our best shot stopper but…" isn't the definition of a goalkeeper to stop shots? lol. I'd rather have a good shot stopper and terrible playing out of the back. Save it then toss it to a defensemen.
