As a Belgian, I know I will never get a second chance like the 2018-window provided. All of our topplayers were in their peak, everything was there to go all the way. But poor playerselections (how do you not select Radja Nainggolan?), and poor tactical choices robbed us of something very special. I know a lot of players from that time feel the same way. It proves that they too have a feeling that they missed out on something. Such a shame.

Belgian here and I disagree with the framing here (although it's an interesting topic and I did not remember De Bruyne's quote).
After 2016 when Belgium went out against Wales due to tactical ineptitude from then manager Wilmots, Belgium were looking for someone with more coaching experience and someone to get the most out of both of our most creative players, Hazard and De Bruyne. Up until then, most of the time one shone, the other struggled and Wilmots only knew how to set up a 433 with De Bruyne on the right wing as to not have them take each other's space.
Martinez came in and introduced that 343 in order to get the best out of both, while also allowing Mertens to come into the team. While it took a little while to get used to the system, with De Bruyne in a lower position than used to at Man City, eventually it worked out great I'd say. I think the quote is from the time they were still figuring things out en route to WC 2018. But pairing De Bruyne as holding mid next to Witsel who acted extremely conservative, allowed for De Bruyne to still operate as creative playmaker and completely unlocked Hazard (who up until then had not been living up to his potential in the Belgium squad).
I'd argue 2018 was a huge success and the tactical approach against Brazil (arguably the strongest Brazil side from the Neymar era and one of the favorites to win it all) was excellent so much that we surprised them to go 2-0 up and hold on for dear life. France got lucky on a corner and kept us in check mostly but no shame in that.
I think after this success, Martinez became too loyal to his best players who got him that success (he went from being ex-Wigan coach to being named at Barcelona due to that world cup). The tactical flexibility he initially had started turning into rigidity to build around the most talented players even if they were not in form or just back from injury.
Nevertheless, the record for Martinez at Belgium: 3rd in 2018, lost to eventual winners France. Out in the quarter finals against eventual winners Italy at Euro 2020. Then knocked out of the group stage at WC 2022. Only the last one is disappointing but many of our stars had had injury riddled seasons and we ended up in the group with two eventual semi finalists and could just as easily have knocked Croatia out if Lukaku scores that big chance. So, could we have hoped for more? For sure, but we're also Belgium, we had a lot of talent but not huge depth so we were kind of dependent on our best players being in shape and on form. If not, it's just going to be hard to consistently beat France, Spain, Italy, England, Germany who've got 5x our population.
In conclusion: yes at the end of his tenure, Martinez turned unbearable with his positivism and unwillingness to change (something Portugal fans will relate to) but that was definitely not yet the case in 2018 and I don't agree with the "wasted the Belgian golden generation" statement.

First of all, there is no evidence whatsoever that a team manager makes any difference on the field. None.
What may be the case is that they bring a new culture into an organisation. Martinez introduced a more scientific and professional approach in Belgium, compared to the traditional ways of doing things. He had good staff around him and worked with numbers. He was in fact well appreciated inside the KVBV. It's clear he's smarter than average for someone in football.
This being said, I don't think national teams should have foreign managers. It just makes no sense, even if they have a convincing set of skills, there's always 100 people in the home country that can do the same thing. When he quit and the federation was looking for a replacement, I was a candidate. I know nothing about football, never played a game and certainly didn't manage a team, but as there is no evidence it's needed to get results and I proposed to do it for half his salary, I though they could make some savings. Too bad they went for an expensive outsider again, just to get to the quarter finals. Incomprehensible.
As a Portuguese I feel sorry I even know about Roberto Martinez this man was given golden generations worth of talent and told "alright just put them in the match and they win" and he somehow couldn't do that.
