Who has forgotten Emiliano Martínez’s obscene gesture when he received his Best Goalkeeper trophy, directed at the French public? Who has forgotten the repeated provocations and the racist chants targeting France after the victory? Faced with such behaviour, FIFA did not impose sanctions that many considered proportionate to the seriousness of the incidents. This is where the real problem lies.
This is not about claiming that FIFA approved of these actions. However, the absence of truly deterrent sanctions sent an extremely negative message. When an organisation responsible for defending the values of sport fails to act with sufficient firmness against behaviour that goes against respect and dignity, it risks creating a sense of impunity. The role of an institution such as FIFA is precisely to remind everyone, through exemplary decisions, that respect for opponents, fair play and self-control are not negotiable principles.
Recent events have only reinforced this debate. Seeing players lose their composure after the final whistle, resort to violent gestures or refuse to show respect to their opponents is unworthy of the highest level of football. A defeat can be painful, but a great champion is also recognised by the way they accept it with dignity.
It is therefore legitimate to ask whether stronger sanctions in the past could have had a deterrent effect. No one can say with certainty that they would have prevented further incidents, but one thing is clear: a lack of a strong response can be interpreted as a lack of willingness to enforce the rules. Sporting justice must be consistent, exemplary and strong enough to protect the values it claims to defend.
By contrast, we must celebrate the exemplary behaviour of the Spanish players. Despite the immense pressure, the importance of the occasion and the tensions that naturally come with a World Cup final, they showed remarkable character: respect, composure and elegance. They proved that it is possible to win without arrogance, to celebrate victory without humiliating an opponent, and to remain dignified in the most important moments.
These players are true knights of football. Through their talent, but also through their values, they bring honour to their sport and their country. They fully deserve to wear this world crown and to be regarded as worthy representatives of football for the next four years.
Football needs role models. It is not only about trophies, records or victories: the greatness of a champion is also measured by the way they win, the respect they show towards their opponents and the way they embody the values of this universal sport.
