I don't agree. He got his tactics largely spot on. Papering over the midfield, being solid at the back, still having enough going forward to win. Recognized early on the effectiveness of players like Sterling. Got performances from Saka. One criticism is he should have used Grealish more. But overall, decent job with obviously not the best team / squad in the tournament.

Ole and Southgate are made from the same cloth. Europa league final and euro 2020 final are carbon copies of each other because of wrong tactics, bad decisions and Way too late subs. Both played extra time like they Looking for penalty shootout. Both of them are bottle jobs when it matters. They both look for the defensive players first.
When mancini made his move, the bottler should of took the goal hanger Sterling off and put grealish/sancho on, instead he subbed rice and brought on Henderson 15 mins after mancinis subs. He absolutely froze, no doubt about it. To be a so called big football nation you have to go and win ,not score 1 and try to sit back and defend for 87 mins against one of the craftiest, experienced successful football nations. We had them on the ropes and he froze. We are not going to have it that easy again. I can't sit through another tournament and watch this talent be wasted. Careers are short. Also where was Sterling for a pen if he was only kept on for them? Sancho or grealish offer so much more to the team than a tap in.

If we'd of won the Euros it would have been a dark day for football as other countries would have followed Gareth's prototype. We had the players to play with a bit of panache (like Italy)
Fair play, Gareth has taken us far in two tournaments but us getting knocked out has been due to a lack of managerial skills not the the teams efforts.

Rashford was 8 inches away from it being a genius move by Southgate. Let's have some perspective here.
For perspective… I am a 50 year old guy from the states, who began following international football in 1994. I felt Wayne Rooney was a sacred cow on the national team that limited England in their style of play and international coaches never seemed to even think of benching him… Watching this tournament I am having similar thoughts and feelings towards Harry Kane…. I understand you need a striker to finish… However-he played poorly overall… and needs players like Grealish to get him the ball in opportune spots… I began to really dislike Southgate’s sacred cow players and not giving Grealish and the one player Santos O think how name is-a real chance to start and have meaningful playing time…. His-Southgate’s woke social persona likely gets him excellent coverage from the press-but his ultra conservative choice of players and tactics was dreadful…. The one major concern I have with Southgate is he is disingenuous, but more importantly I see him as being as having rigid-closed-minded views but pretending to be flexible and thoughtful about his decisions when they have already been made… he also has the personality to dig in deeper to his core values of playing non-creative players with a few sacred cows like Harry Kane when he feels pressure from the outside or during a tense match… England has dynamic and talented players…. Stop making a singular goal scorer like Harry Kane an absolute essential starter-and have a coach who will truly encourage the creative players to play in words and deeds and not talk about how these players have grown and matured and how he trusts them only to play them minimally….
I think it would be very unwise to see this failure without its context.
I disagree that he performed particularly badly under pressure. You'd have to have nads the size of coconuts not to have been negatively affected in his position.
On top of this, he took responsibility.. genuine responsibility. That's gold dust.
Southgate deserves a huge amount of credit for what he has done. It would be an utter tragedy for him to go.
He is exactly what England need.

Grealish, Rashford and Sancho are not match winners and one else in team are either, they all play in premier league teams with international talent, who are the real leaders of their teams, they make the english players look good. England never beat good teams over 90 minutes, because they lack the skills and temperament of players on the continent and Southgate lacks the tactical knowledge of many international managers, who have had success at club and international level. England are overated by pudits and the media, they need a dose of reality of where England stand in the footballing world
