  1. Tactics are great, but players need to be allowed to break with the tactics and follow intuition. That's what I get from that last segment.

  2. Ah yes the dreaded pass back to CB, give to fullback to move up the side and cross to middle. Hopefully he actually picks the best guys for it this time.

  3. hey Sam! loved the video. just an idea, you should think about reaching out to somebody like Zealand for a collab on tactics or anything else. dude makes great Football Manager (a soccer tactics videogame) content and is a usmnt fan.

  4. The key for the US as Lowery pointed out is that McKennie and Musah can carry the ball past the midfield and take it the final third. However, it still raises the question as to why Berhalter doesn't use De La Torre instead of Lleget or Roldan despite the latter two being horrendous at it.

  5. His tactics is to play down to our concacaf opponent, he wants to give the fans a false notion that concacaf is extremely difficult to win and believes a tie on the road is a positive thing. His amateur way of thinking is going to cost us when we make it to the World Cup. This guy is a club coach at best

  6. I strongly believe, especially living abroad, that the world see's the USMNT in two views. 1) mucho young talent playing in Europe 2) a joke of a manager with his camps, rosters, lineups, tactics, and sub patterns

  7. Awesome interview Sam and Joe. I came from an American football background but was thrust into coaching youth soccer for 7 years so for me I focused on the technical side of the game and thus struggled to adjust tactically during a match. I find this content fascinating and helps me see the game better. Thank you both!

  8. Great interview! I love the content in this interview. Joseph is definitely right about the stuff away from the ball. I've played and/or watched soccer my entire life and one of the reasons soccer is so awesome is because, even though it's 11 v 11, there are infinite number of tactical and strategic options available to employ. When I try to explain soccer to someone, I tell them that the majority of the game happens away from the ball. It's fun to watch a game and be able to pause it and explain what this player will do, then that player, then that next player, etc or give different scenarios how it will play out depending on what the tactic may be. Off the ball movement more important than most realize but is still very underrated and not explored/examined enough by our fan base. But compared to where we have been as a fan base in terms of knowledge, we have come a LONG way.

  10. I'm sure Joseph Lowery has interesting points and I hope he invests in a new mic so I can hear them

  11. Should have made the thumbnail a folder paper scribbled on with crayons. Feel like that would pretty adequately sum up his tactics.

  12. re: Tactical Misconceptions – I really enjoyed that you included this in the conversation. The one thing that I feel that most fans overlook is that often, simply standing in the correct place can discourage an attacking move. If the most direct attacking pass is made more difficult (or better – impossible) by a defender simply being in the right place, a counter-attack often simply dies.

I feel like this is the most-overlooked aspect of the game by most fans when they analyze players. Sure, a player may not be the greatest passer, and he may not be the best athlete, but if they are consistently disrupting the opponents' attacks by simply standing in the right spot on the field, they are a huge asset to their team. This is something you can't really see on TV, since it mostly applies to D-Mids who are off-camera when these moments happen, but it can be seen in the stadium and the all-22 recordings if you know what to look for.

  13. I've only ever really listened to Joe (I'm a big TSS fan). Idk what I expected Joe to look like but for some reason that wasn't it 😂

  14. sam, i love your interviews. but please, i beg of you, stick your earbuds all the way in your ear. for my sanity. please.

  15. The major issue with any team is time but In WCQ keep it simple,be smart, aggressive and bring your top talent period. Qualifying for the World Cup is the #1 objective and the only thing I care about. Time together is more important once you are qualified and we haven't clinched yet.

  16. Great video Sam, just wanted to pick your brain on what type of issue does a healthy Gio do to the squad? It is a good issue to have, but in my eyes I don’t see anyone who would drop at this moment. Weah has came into his own this past summer and into WCQ, you’re not going to drop Weston who is arguably one of if not best midfielder in Concacaf at the moment. And in my eyes Musah is someone who we can’t drop with his technical ability he brings to the table. Again it’s a good problem to have but I just want to hear your thoughts on it if possible.

  17. Tactics? Overload, overcrowd and pray for set pieces? While also sucking at set pieces? Even a novice footy fan can point to a complete lack of tactics and not enough technical proficiency to apply hopeful tactics.
