Same gender teams and solo dance really need to become main events. All the forced “traditional””romantic” couple style has been tiresome to watch for too long.

I'm fine with Shoma finally getting called for his flip. It hurts me more to think that Matteo will get called on his quad loop too, but fair is fair. Maybe he won't feel so pressured to do it if the other bad quads are getting called.
thank you again for your fair commentary on the skating world…..It's always been interesting to me that Debi Thomas was talked about as the first black world class level female skater and yet nothing is every said about Tai Bablilonia who is black/Filipino…….I LOVED Debi….definitely need a deep dive into her story, would be interesting.
You are both gay..why would you go to it being a trans issue? It totally isn't because in icedance this is neither an advantage or disadvantage. But same sex icedance is a game changer because of the story a dance tells and the choreography.

Debi's race was not a factor in what happened. She was so focused on medicine that she was not actively pursuing endorsements. Endorsements are a fallacy, they rained down for Dorothy and Peggy, but even skaters like Rosalynn, Elaine and Michele Kwan didnt get huge endorsements. They made their money as professional skaters.

And I hate the idea that most likely iSU would work to create a controversie regarding jumps with Shoma and Chun or Ilia…that just kilss the enjoyment of this sport , cheap way to bust or try to bust the sport.
Funny term "assigned sex at birth" – such a nonsensical expression and a sign of loss of critical thinking and basic knowledge of science. Biology and nature does not assign sex. It is a biological fact. And then there's a tiny percentage that don't feel like the sex they're born. But the sex is not assigned as an administrative act of bureaucracy. It's nature in action.
Katie Barnes at ESPN has a book coming out about sports and gender. They are a great person to follow if you want to learn more about the topic.

I'm very interested in the idea of opening up new opportunities for pairs to explore the type of storytelling that speaks to them. I don't think there's anything wrong with a male and female partner portraying a romance storyline if that's what speaks to them. Skaters should have the freedom to create whatever they want.
Anticipating with eagerness the new rule about pre-rotations and other take off shenanigans! Pre-rotations to me aren't just about cheating rotations. They bastardize the fundamental technical requirements that differentiate one jump from another. Hopefully no more toe axels and floops!
Olivia Smart is great, but I hope she gets a better partner than Tim Dieck because I want her to be a top competitor, and not just competing for the Olympics.
Can same sex pairs perform the same technical difficulty? I‘d say absolutely yes! For 13 years I‘ve competed internationally in Equestrian vaulting and later joined a university acrobatics team. In both sports same sex teams are completely normal and perform lifts that probably require a lot more strength than ice dance lifts. For reference, in vaulting you will often see lifts performed by two girls together that are pretty much the same as the lifts in pairs skating – on top of a cantering horse! The debate in figure skating about this topic just goes to show how much women are still underestimated and what a narrow ideal of femininity is promoted (slim, small, fragile-looking). I believe that opening the sport to same sex couples would also be an amazing opportunity for more inclusivity as it would open the door for girls and women with bigger, stronger bodies to compete at the highest level.
I haven't listened to the Debi Thomas ep but I mostly had to stop listening to that pod after their Tonya ep, which was totally egregious, malpractice, shameful… Sarah Marshall (the host) is very funny and endearing, but she puts a trite framework together first and then concocts a narrative to fit…
deduction for poor take-off was already listed in communication 2474 (for season 2022/23) and maybe even in earlier communications. What is "new" in communication 2558 is that the deduction must be between -2 and -4 (in communication 2474 it was -1 to -3). Unless judges are explicitly instructed and even ordered to apply this deduction during the upcoming pre-season seminars, I do not think we will see much change from the previous season.
Mao asada was the first person I ever noticed that did a floop and now you see it all the time. Shoma, morisi, all the Eteri girls…. Morisi especially, you can’t tell the difference between a toe and a sal. I’m glad they are encouraging better technique finally.
Dave, it occurred to me that you’d make good documentaries.
Imagine if only one toe loop was allowed in the SP – great for Jun, terrible for Shoma and a bunch of others who rely on 4T-3T.
Just to clarify. Vivien Papp was Hungary's top junior woman (talented girl with lots of potential) but then her federation stopped supporting her to support Polina Dzsumanyijazova, who is Russian and coached by Sergei Rozanov. Vivien actually wasn't with Julia Sebestyén (which may have been another reason why she wasn't being favoured by her federation), she was coached by Lorenzo Magri in Italy but just recently (after deciding that she will now skate for another country), she has moved to Switzerland and Stéphane has now become her coach. I'm interested to see what country she will choose to represent.
Regarding Kostornaia, it may actually be difficult for her to skate internationally for another country because she has now been sanctioned by Ukraine (banned from entering the country) due to participating in MANY pro-war propoganda ice shows. Letting her skate internationally may end up causing way too much backlash towards the ISU. So many of the skaters have expressed pro-war sentiments one way or another (essentially all their top skaters), you have to wonder if any of the top skaters would even be allowed back, should the ban be lifted to allow "neutrals."
trans women (male to female) have no place in competing with biological women across the board. sports dictate by testosterone in which men produce so much more testosterone than women, and it's the reason why sports segregate athetes by gender.

I wish the idea of same gender partnerships were not controversial–acrobatic gymnastics has been doing it for years! Dave, you like gymnastics–check it out if you are unfamiliar with this discipline. Women compete as pairs and trios, men compete as pairs and foursomes; there are mixed pairs, but they are not the majority. The nice thing is that the choreography can tell a wider variety of "stories" than we see in skating. It is also nice that you are less apt to see children performing routines that are too sexy for their age. In fact, since the "top" is usually younger than the "base" (think of cheer), the judges can take a deduction if the music or choreography is too mature.
I have seen Alissa and Kseniya's "Reflections"–it is absolutely breath-taking. I love everything Ice Dance International does. In fact, Dave, I think an interview with Doug Webster would be a lot of fun–and then he and Jonathan could sing together!
FYI – I don’t know if anyone mentioned, but as an awards junkie, there IS an Emmy award for music, it’s called Outstanding Music Supervision. It’s been around for 6 years now. One of my favorite categories. ❤

Can we just do a No Lift Ice Dance, that have no gender restrictions, just 2 partners period. There's no advantage outside of lifts really.

Why do you say there is natural pre rotation to every jump and skaters are required to have an element of prerotation on a salchow? If your salchow is taking off fwd, it’s wrong. It should take off from a backward inside edge.
