I absolutely love this
That was phenomenal, both very classy individuals!!!
I love the casual conversation between the two as if nobody else is there and it's two friends chopping it up.
In the summer of 1965, I went with my Brooklyn, NY-based day camp to Shea Stadium to watch the Mets host the L.A. Dodgers——–Our seats were in the far upper-deck—So high that we could wave to the passengers in airplanes arriving at La Guardia Airport——–Anyway, the day camp was sponsored by the community center that Sandy Koufax went to; In fact, several of us (myself included) went to Lafayette High School, as did Koufax——As luck would have it, the lowly Mets were facing the mighty Dodgers—-Exciting, as there was a love/hate relationship among us as to how we felt about the visiting team, who once called Brooklyn their home, and their star left-handed pitcher, who was one of us————–Our seats were along the third-base line, and we had a perfect, if far-away, view of Koufax's magnificent delivery———Mind you, Koufax was in his prime, and to our delight, the Mets were actually beating him, but, again, as luck would have it, the rains came: Typical monsooning, New York City summer downpours—Hollywood-style lightning & thunder——After a more than three-hour rain delay, the game was called before it was an official game, meaning that the rare chance for a Mets victory at home against the mighty Sandy Koufax and the Los Angeles Dodgers didn't count————Such is the life of a Mets fan in 1965 . . .
Listen to Koufax praise a substitute player Lou Johnson for his contributions to the club. What a humble man.
Sandy Koufax, three-time World Series winner … 1959, 1963, 1965.
And Sandy was famous for getting his second wind in the late innings.
Just amazing to be a fan of this team. The greatest in their respective jobs. Incredible stuff.
I grew up in the 80’s in a baseball family who told me all about the kid Koufax. He retired at 30 they said, but he was the most dominant pitcher of his era. A no hitter in four straight seasons including a perfect game. A strikeout artist. We’re an east coast family (Red Sox), but word of his exploits would reach my family in the Boston papers and my uncles and Grampa would marvel at the stats
THE most charismatic athlete I've ever seen.
Most mind-boggling baseball stat: his last two years – 1965/66 – 54 complete games …
and unlike Clemens, Maddux and Kershaw, Sandy really was Mr. October.
My god he was gorgeous
CLASS on both sides of the mic. You dont see that much these days.
He’ll make it to 101
Counting the playoffs and spring training he pitched over 400 innings in 1965. That's like three years worth of pitching in today's game
So fitting SANDY spoke at VINNY's retirement ceremony at DODGER STADIUM….
"Vinnie" 😄👍☝️
You can see how much pain he was clearly in. He smiles so big when he mentions that he gets the next 4 months off
I wish his elbow would have lasted longer. At least through 1968. What kind of numbers would he have posted if he was still going when they raised the mound that year?
The two greats together….
Great, Great pitcher!!
After Frank Howard was traded to the Senators before the season started, and Tommy Davis tore up his ankle, the Dodgers were almost completely without power hitters. Drysdale, with 9 HR, hit more dingers than many of the fielders. It was all pitching and defense, with Koufax, Drysdale , and Claude Osteen carrying the load, with Johnny Podres as a 4th starter.
"Two days rest". Nuff said.
On preserving the use of his arm at the announcement of his retirement at 31, "I don't regret one minute of the last twelve years, but I think I would regret one year that was too many."
Sandy Koufax remains the youngest player to ever be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Koufax may have been one of the most articulate of baseball players, as smart as they come. And Scully was the master of calling a game and doing interviews. So sweet to watch and listen to these two.
Best pitcher. Best announcer.
The GOAT! to bad his career wasn't longer
Sandy has more than just talent. He has courage and humility. His humanity makes me cry in appreciation of him as a human being. He sacrificed himself for the common good and his team and stood by his convictions!
The greatest left-hander of all time.
Two of the best in the history of the game.
I've probably watched this clip 100 times. If you're here you're already a baseball fan. I wish athletes were as candid as Sandy and I wish reporters were as classy as Vin. This piece of footage never gets old for me. The exhaustion and jubilation on Sandy is palpable. But his dedication to the 'team' and what he determines as important is telling. Halladay is the closest thing we've had to a legend as a blue jays fan, but I can't imagine what a Dodgers fan would say.
really honest answers from Sandy. True grit and sheer determination.
Great humble athlete.
He was pitching on two days rest. A complete game three hit shutout on two days rest.
