1973年3月17日、アケダクト競馬場で行われたG3ベイショアで、セクレタリアトは3歳デビューを果たした。彼が輝かしい2歳シーズンを終えて以来、多くの出来事があった。エクリプス賞を2回受賞。2歳チャンピオンの座を年度代表馬の称号が上回った。それ以来、年度代表馬に選ばれた2歳馬は、1997年のフェイバリットトリック1頭のみである。メドウスタッドの創設者クリストファー・チェナリーが亡くなった後、セクレタリアトは当時の最高額となる608万ドルでシンジケート化された。この取引により、セクレタリアトはあと1シーズンレースに出場してレガシーを確保できることになった。そして彼はそれを実行した。ビッグレッドとロン・ターコットはぬかるんだアケダクトトラックの7ハロンを1分23秒1/5で完走した。伝説の1973年3歳シーズンが正式に始まった。

So funny to read this in the book. Ron yelling for the others to give room and forget his name but in particular for one and he wouldn't. Ron was scared to death that he was gonna screw secretariat on the rail and him losing his first 3 yr old race. He said he was seeing his he would be as a 3 yr old and was the longest 7 f of his life, exact words! He thought he screwed him in first race as 3 yr old but big red being big red pulled it out I the end!!

Holy moly, what a move. That horse has made me cry in wonder for 44 years now. I saw the Beatles, I saw Ali. But I only saw true greatness when I saw Secretariat.
couple of points…this was before the inner track was installed, which since has been removed…also there's no Home Depot and the parking lot is filled with cars who were racing fans and not casino players.
Geez, that acceleration to break through the pack was just POWERFUL!
