With the strikers we had available, we probably needed another system to provide them more service, 2 actual wingers, not wing backs, providing decent crosses into the box, which any one of our strikers would have been capable of nodding in. Our success depended on our flair players and our keeper. When Willock and Dieng went, we were done.

OK so the manager couldn’t carry us through to the playoffs and got the sack. Who’s next ? Will he be good enough or better than MW ? Much to ponder. Much to regret.

When bringing in a striker in January is often mentioned, realistically who could we have brought in ? There was zero chance of getting Tom Lawrence, out of contract this Summer, bought for 5 Mill and on a rumoured 35k a week. We weren't going to pay 250-300k to Swansea for Patterson, also out of contract this Summer. So if you aren't going to get another number 10 in, then what kinda quality striker are you gonna get ? Just my opinion, Willock really seemed to step up and be our main man when Chair went to Afcon. I think we lost some momentum when Chair came back in to the side. To get the best outta Austin and Dykes, give them a service. Again just my opinion, but the service from the wing backs over the season was poor. Reading at home, 2 great crosses 1 decent cross against Sheffield United at home ball ends up in the back of the net.
I love Les But I feel his time is up. The signing's of both Gray and Hendrick I said before we brought them in would be a terrible idea both rubbish/past it and on Huge wages and would destroy team moral. I wasn't the only person who thought we 100% we needed a striker in January. Im just a normal guy not involved in football how did I know better than him! its his actual job and he still could not see the obvious. I was pleasently suprised when Gary actually scored a couple but in the end sadly I was proved right.
When we were motoring the triumvirate of Johansen, Chair and Willock were behind so much of what was good about the way we were playing. When they got broken up for Afcon, injuries and in Stef's case, just rotation to keep him fresh, we looked a different side. Losing so many goalkeepers certainly didn't help and sure, another striker in Jan would have been handy, but I agree with the majority here in wondering who that striker would have been. Have trouble getting my head around how loose we got defensively towards the end, but I think that was just the belief being drained out of the players by the poor run. I liked the way MW had us playing when we were flying but we didn't have the depth to maintain that model once we started to get injuries to key players – a real shame.
Very good summary. Clearly the strikers didn't score enough goals (Statistics show that) and yes ofcourse, thats related to creating chances for them to score – but even so when we were doing well, the goals weren't significantly coming from the out and out attackers – but from our creative midfielders – Willock and Chair and even defensive players. Dykes has had a poor season in terms of goals scored but has contributed … but ultimately we need goals from the strikers. We were perhps fortunate in games to be in 4th come January but team spirit and perfoemances were the best I've seen for many a year. One thing I have thought about is the fall of Chairs performances after AFCON – He's been awesome prior to that – I remember interview on 'Open all R's' podcast november time perhaps – cocky, ambitious, happy and rightly so… the imagine going to AFCON hoping for a platform to get his name recognized globally, play for his country etc. as any footballer dreams… but, I think I'm right, spend most of the games on the bench playing perhaps just 1 half – while other players (probably not as talented as him) were playing. To any young ambitious player that must have been tough to take … and I think we saw that on his return – he wasn't the Chair from before for quite a few games – and this combined with, as the summary tells – unbelievable GK crisis leading to confidence crash… lack of dependable goal scorers, new loan players over integration arguably, then Willocks injury etc. led to a massive decline. (Illias if your read this – don't worry – you're awesome and good times are coming). Warburton wanted an attacking midfielder in the January window and perhaps this would have compensated for the loss of Willock and drop of Chair's performances (and created chances for the strikers) but was denied by presumablt the hierachy saying no to investing more money (because they were pissed off with him for not entertainining the promotion of youth). On the other hand personally speaking as much as we all want propmotion to the EPL – I'm kind of happy to be in the Championship to at least get excited when we win some games… I fear in EPL at this point it would be a very miserable season for a fan…. though money would be great especially if management is sensible and adopts a Norwich like approach.
If you compare this team to the last 3 playoff winning teams to QPR theres a glaring difference in quality and depth, to even have spent time in the playoff spots was a surprise, although I expected that to be short lived which it was.
Fulham had Mitrovic, Decordova-Reid, Harrison Reed, Rodak and other players with quality.
Brentford had Toney, Mbuemo, Raya, Jansson, Pinnock, Henry, Janelt and Norgaard
Forest had Brennan Johnson, Djed Spence, Worrall, Cook, Garner and Zinkernagel
And QPR? Maybe Dieng and Chair at a push. No one else really stands out. Williock on his day has quality.
Fact is the squad is really weak and not a promotion contending team, the league is improving and qpr are standing still, which becomes a step back. Expecting qpr to struggle next season.
