  1. Wash said the he and Scioscia are cut from the same cloth. I really hope we do go back to the small ball where we move guys over, take the extra base, and put pressure on the opposing pitcher and defense like we did in '02 I really hope this coaching staff is what turns us back around to playing winning baseball. Thanks for bringing back the great memories of 2002! Hope we shock the baseball world in '24.

  2. Hope-ium is now Frisch-ium, you guys are addicts😉 Thanks for the positive vibes and good memories, my affliction started in ‘95, so memory of success was dimming. Thanks as always. ps I’ve come around to looking into Bauer, not proud of it!!!

  3. Epic fail on excluding the 2002 bullpen in this episode they were so vital and important to the success of that team, the bullpen was nasty at the beginning of the season with Percival, Donnelly, and Weber and only got better when Shields came up during the year, not to mention K-Rods postseason run. Other than Percival none of these guys were household names, Donnelly was a 30 yr old rookie! Our offense was never much of a question(they did give up Mo Vaughn for Appier) going into the 2002 year but it was our pitching staff both starters and bullpen, very similar to the current team. It would of been fun to listen to your breakdown that bullpen and compare to this year's. Thanks for the shows!

  4. Great podcast!!! I’ve got a question and I know you’ve talked about it but as of right now, what are the chances that the Angels go get someone like Snell or Bellinger or even Merrifield? I feel like they aren’t going to sign anyone but I’m hoping I am wrong!

  5. I love the optimism from you guys and I hope things play out like they did in 2002. I also see some of the similarities between this team/coaching staff and the 2002 team/coaches. I don’t have the info in front of me to confirm, but I don’t recall any of the 2002 core of players doing much time on the IL. Seems like they weren’t missing anyone down the stretch of the season and playoffs. Keeping guys healthy is the most important issue for this 2024 team in my opinion.

  6. Love this show, guys! Definitely a top-5 IMHO! A couple of thoughts: 1. Griffin Canning! He could be THAT guy, in part because he could be the best overall athlete on the team. 2. Luis Rengifo! Just look at how he was crushing the baseball before he got hurt last year. Put him in the lineup and watch what happens. 3. To your points about Rendon, they don't call him "Tony two bags" for nothing. 4. Guys just have to stay healthy. When you look at the everyday lineup in '02, no less than 5 of our guys played in 150 games or more! 5. We definitely, and Bo Porter's on the record as saying this (as you are Mike), we need to run more. Interesting stat: in '01 we stole 116 bases, in '02: 117, because it's not all about stealing bases.

  7. Looking at the 23 season I gotta say the Angels had some horrible luck with injuries that might have made the difference in their post-season run. Signing Rendon to a massive contract was, to my mind, a terrible investment when they were in chronic need of good pitching – even if he had stayed healthy. At least they could've expected a significant contribution to the offence but that never happened – he's hardly taken the field for 3 years in a row. May turn out to be the worst contract in baseball history. Their 2 big call ups in O'Happe and Neto both were making big contributions and went down with long term injuries. Then they lost Urshela for the year, and again Trout missed many games. Oh ya – I almost forgot Walsh – their former all-star first baseman who developed some mystery condition and suddenly couldn't hit his way out of a wet paper bag. I don't know how much injuries played into the pitching side, but I do know that mid-season the team had 16 players on the IL – the most in the league.

  8. I have only 2 players that I have expectations for.
    1. Rendon- Play 3B for more than 58 games unlike the last 4 seasons without any drama. The real number is at least 135 games as he did with the Nationals.
    2. Trout- Being the official leader of the team. Not discounting O'Hoppe and Neto. Next, be the everyday DH. Not saying he can't play CF, but fill in when Moniak is struggling or a day off. Need to realize he's signed to 2031 and accept this is the second half of his career.

As for the expectations and predictions consensus like everyone else here is none. Just hope the learning curve of this coaching staff philosophy doesn't take too long. All players to stay healthy for most of the season. And lastly, come September be in the hunt for a playoff position.

  9. What really needs to improve is the fan support for home games. It’s sad and pathetic 1/4 of stadium is filled and even when there are great plays, it sounds like a library. It’ll probably get worse considering the Japanese fan base will be gone. (Not attacking anyone just venting 😅) 😂
