  1. Not against what the players are doing and their federation is clearly a mess, but it's kinda fucked to make Panama travel all that way just to not show up

  2. You missed the opportunity to go ALL CANADA in the opening line. Here's what I mean…

"Canadian soccer right now is in absolute shambles… EH?"

The "EH?" would have been so choice. And then you could have thrown in a "Sorry" (pronounced "SORE-y") a sentence or two later.**

**This was written before I got to the Super Slomo robotic "S o r r y". So good inclusion, but I do prefer to have a raised eyebrow sincere look on my face before dropping a "sore-y" that is absolutely dripping with sarcasm.

  3. On one level I certainly applaud them as you gotta fight for what you believe in and I'm sure there will be a deal in there somewhere for both sides. However on another level it really is a missed opportunity for some of these Canadian players since these friendlies are "shop window" games right in the middle of the summer transfer season. On top of that, that little extra prep for the team could play a role between finishing second vs third in a group, while typically helping certain players shine in front of a massive global audience. Think about how many times in the past a player out of nowhere has a solid WC and ends up getting bought by a bigger team in a better league.

  4. To be this close to Qatar and to have left this unrest percolating may be the greatest fuck up of all! Letting 20k of your fans and the PMNT post for a match they had no intention of playing was a maple dick move, they owe gas, lodging and ticket reimbursement at a minimum. I'm all for getting them getting fairly compensated and hope they get this sorted-really psyched to watch'em, but handled differently-100% should have IMO.

  5. This could really backfire on them by them not doing well in Qatar. At least Iran didn't get a practice match which is good for USA.

  6. The Canadian Soccer Association is a mess and clearly out of its depth now that the athletes have put them on the world stage. But while I support the athletes, they should have played the game on Sunday given many fans had traveled a long distance – some paying for ferry trips – only to have the game cancelled 2 hours before kickoff. The athletes should have played this game for the fans – and then served notice they would not play again until an agreement was reached.
Vancouver fans had already lost the Iran game and this was another slap in the face. Again, while there is more sympathy here for the players, they clearly need to get some skilled communications support to navigate these tricky waters now that Canada has achieved a higher profile. (the only good thing here is it has exposed the need for new CSA leadership).

  7. Christine Sinclair, the WORLD'S all-time leading goal scorer, woman or man, should be a millionaire. If you'd like to know if there is really a problem with the CSA, consider THAT!

  8. Canada Women's National Team, Olympic Gold Medal, 2 Time Olympic Bronze medalists. You'd never know it. Their welcome home was lame. and fans couldn't even buy a t-shirt….FROM THE OLYPIC GOLD WINNERS. There were none! Get your crap together, CSA!

  9. Pretty low to kick Canadian soccer fans when they're down. We've supported and encouraged your U.S team through your failure to make the 2018 World Cup and your shockingly mediocre WC qualifier. Not to mention your courtroom fiasco with the USWNT.

First World Cup in 36 yrs. and the Canadian Men's Team think they're rock stars. That's what happens when you don't actually live in Canada but play overseas. You forget that no one cares about soccer in Canada. Those of us who do care have stood by this team through decades of failure. This is an insult to the fans.

I don't know if you actually looked at the demands or not but they're laughable. Soccer Canada couldn't pay for those demands if Canada won the next 50 World Cups.

It's true that Canada Soccer is a complete shambles and has been for years. I'd also like to know more about their back door deal with CSB. But the players could have played and negotiated in good faith – like the El Salvadorian team during the qualifiers. Instead they decided to mutiny even though there was nothing to lose by playing (any new deal was to be retroactive).

Now we have a team that on paper are dramatically superior to the U.S and Mexico teams, but the momentum they built with the fans is gone. They soured a whole country that was just starting to get into the men's team. In essence, they shot themselves in the foot. Now the deal they hoped for is doubly untenable because they won't have the fans to pay for it.

A cautionary tale for the rest of the soccer world. Never forget who got you to where you are.

  10. The Canadian men are asking for equitable pay, while the women are asking for equal pay. If the men are going to speak out for the women’s team perhaps they should go into discussions on what the women’s team is asking for because it seems like they are telling the federation what they think the women deserve instead of what they want.

  11. What a stupid move from the players because realistically most of the country couldn’t care less about soccer and could use funding elsewhere. They got us an Olympic gold and that’ll hold us over for a few decades

  12. Lets see.
Women's team wins a gold medal
Men's team wins a Concacaf competition and in doing so not only wins a game against the US and Mexico but does not lose a game to either. Qualifying for the World Cup and getting a group where they have a decent shot of advancing.
I am picking Canada to steal a point or maybe even surprise Belgium in game 1. Totally expecting Belgium to expect the low ranked Canadians to be a push over …tune up game… and show up unprepared… So… ya… I'm expecting Canada to score first. Maybe…just maybe they can ride it home for a win.
Croatia should be a tough game. Canada has a shot.
And after watching the US destroy Morocco. Ya… Canada is going to win that game easily.

  13. This is bad, Canada really should be playing friendlies against South American or European teams or even Asian teams to prepare for the World Cup. If they just play Nations League they’re going to be dismantled by Belgium, Croatia and even Morocco.

  14. Few people realize that the USWNT actually lost money in their new deal but like most of the u.s population they know nothing of business and economics and can't do basic math so they have no clue… they uswnt were actually making mote money than the usmnt especially guaranteed money (the women got paid regardless of if they played or not where the men only got paid if they play meaning during the whole covid thing the women still got paid whereas the men did not) also the women also got full health coverage that was paid for whereas the men did not because they optioned out of it (that's just the two major things) and the women were offered THE EXACT SAME CONTRACT as the men and turned it down

  15. So it is a bit more complicated and nuanced here. That said, Canada Soccer is still corrupt and awful. So basically, the whole deal with CSB is basically Canada did not have a local domestic league. It had three teams playing in MLS (the US system) and one playing in the NASL, then USL 2nd tier US league. For Canada Soccer, this is untenable (for obvious reasons. How can you grow the game without a pro league?) and attempts to start at the grassroots level have failed several times, for various reasons (Match Fixing with the CSL, no ownership groups, other competing pro sports, etc).

So a group of potential team owners (Most well know being the ownership of the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Winnipeg Blue Bombers) formed CSB and said "We will start a league with teams, and invest the money in doing so, if you give us the broadcast rights for the national teams and various Canadian tournaments to use and resell." Very similar to how MLS got started with a business called SUM. The deal was something like 3 million a year, with some minor scaling, but very locked in and with a 10 year deal and option to extend another 10. This was done some time before Canada qualified for the World Cup and not long after it was discovered, Canada Soccer actually had to pay various TV broadcast networks to show games, since the rights weren't worth it to them. So it makes sense why they made this deal, to get something and a domestic league.

So, this went down and the Canadian Premier League came about. The existing MLS teams were allowed to stay in MLS and the other team was basically told "Jump ship to the CPL, or close up shop" which then did and were replaced (See: Ottawa Fury/Atletico Ottawa). The league sold those rights to MediaPro who formed OneSoccer, a streaming service to broadcast games and apparently paid something like $100 million over ten years (although much of that "investment" is in kind service, like starting the service, filming games, etc). Not much was heard, although there was a bit of anger and Canada Soccer's merch deal they cut shortly after with Nike that had huge supply issues (perpetually out of stock on kits and lacklustre designs).

Fast forward to today, suddenly the rights are now worth something because the men qualified, and the team (who for some reason doesn't have a world cup deal with the federation) wants to be paid. Canada Soccer is crying poor saying "We don't have the revenue, we sold the rights to start the domestic league." the team is saying "You are getting paid $38 million from FIFA for us qualifying, don't tell us that and your domestic league deal is a sham." and the federation is saying "We need that $38 million to cover our other costs" which seems to be a crock because how the heck can you bank qualifying for the World Cup to cover your costs.

Then you add that Canada Soccer never had a merchandise royalty agreement with players (until now with one player, which now has every other playing saying WTF?), has the audacity to be buying themselves thousand dollar suits when demanding players return kit and equipment for reuse, the federation not having properly scaled the CSB deal, we now have a recipe for disaster before the World Cup because Canada Soccer is inept and corrupt, although not entirely, because at least they did manage to get a domestic league. That is, if there also wasn't some speculation and questions as to how legit the CSB deal, as apparently some board members in Canada Soccer have commented, what we didn't sign off on that, but there are questions if this is legitimate or just them trying to save face.
