Nastia and Shawn were just ahead of everyone else and they had such opposing builds and skills. Almost like what the other one 'lacked', the other excelled at. And it's interesting to see how Shawn's style and build became the favored as the sport evolved and changed. Have a look the 2012, 2016, and 2020/1 teams. Almost all of them took to Shawn's form. Shorter but more muscular. Built for power and lift over flexibility and length.
No one, not even Simone has ever been as consistent on beam as Shawn was. I saw her stumble on beam maybe two or three times TOTAL in her career. No one has ever TUMBLED on beam like her either.
She lands a lot of skills with her chest down really low and she struggles to hit a 180 degree split. But I think the routine was created in a way that benefitted her. She deserved that Olympic gold on beam 🙂

I think being a stout little shortie is an advantage on beam.
