Real talk, with proper investment/development there’s no reason we can’t be talking about winning a World Cup, not just making it to one. Aussie DNA. Sports is what we do.
Domestic football in Australia is rubbish in the last thirty years I went to a game once or twice because is disappointing seeing how poorly skills players show on the pitch…
As in Quality assurance…it is a continuous improvement process that we emphasise on…and SKY is the limit….Socceroos should be aiming for a podium finish and why not ?
The Socceroos as a unit were a great team but let's not forget we don't have players in the EPL, La Liga, Serie A and other top European leagues like we used to be producing in the NSL. The player development in this country needs a lot of work.
We have set ourselves in a great position right now. It's time to put money into Football in Australia and focus on player development and competing with the likes of AFL and NRL. It will be such a wasted opportunity if nothing is to be done right now. Australia is talking about football at the moment, so let's take advantage of this and fund more money and attention to the world game.
Arnold achieved much under constant unfair fire. Move him on? Well non delusional Australians will see that only negatively. Football is our fourth code. But probably our first code when it comes to the Socceroos. If you want to build the code you don’t cut the head off of a man who has embodied our bottom line: continue to fight the odds, especially when many stab you in the back and in the front while you’re doing it.
Argentinian here. You guys did amazing, if you keep working hard you can definitely surprise everyone the next world cup. Really looking forward to see you guys in 2026!
The A-League is not substandard as a blanket statement, but there are several aspects by which it is. Brisbane playing games out of Redcliffe for example instead of in Brisbane was absolutely ridiculous, and obviously the investment in the league is no where near the investment you see in other growing leagues like MLS, which impacts the kind of import talent we can get in the local teams – the salary caps are also too low.
There's also the issues with the connection from grassroots football. It's the most played sport in the country at junior level, but that doesn't carry through to the higher age groups for a variety of reasons. Also cases like Cristian Volpato who was dropped by two a-league clubs, but now is playing for AS Roma – one of the biggest clubs in the world and is probably going to defect to Italy. As a multicultural nation, we need to stop letting talent defect to Greece, Croatia, Italy, etc. We're essentially paying and training talent for other nations when these guys come through the AIS.
Also in general the attitude towards the sport needs to change. You still have the whole 'rugby is a mens sport but soccer is for pussies' mindset from an embarrassingly large segment of the Australian community, but fortunately as we saw with the turnouts to watch the Socceroos games in Sydney and Melbourne, it's not the sentiment of everyone.
