  1. Shame off the field was counted more than what he did on it. The only English 10 that could ever have been considered in the same conversation as Carter, Barrett and Russell in terms of style and excitement

  2. Unfortunately he knew that (OP) and it messed his head; and he isn't alone, there are many phenomenally gifted players and the danger of it going to their head is very common.

  3. He went to my old school Danny. Gets talked about a bit by the rugby teachers. I love him as a player as his agility and passing ability is unbelievable

  4. I certainly agree that his talent was supreme. Almost inevitably, he had weaknesses in defence but he could do things that few other English fly halves can/could. So why did successive, highly professional, supremely successful England coaches just not pick him? Off field? Well, Dallaglio (cocaine supplying) was more “damaging”, particularly as he was England captain at the time. Defence frailties? Were they deemed to be just too much at international level, if not club level? Is the England international game built so much around the power and kicking game that skills at fly half are deemed too much of a risk?

Is England doing the same with Marcus Smith?

I genuinely don’t know the answers. I desperately want consistent success for England. I put that long term success higher than playing in a particular style. I have to have faith in coaches such as the current England set up to understand what will succeed; they might just be (possibly only) better rugby coaches than I was?

  5. Another quality player left in the talent graveyard for English Rugby..
    Nick Abendanon
    Delon Armitage
    Steffon Armitage
    James Simpson-Daniel
    Sam Simmonds
    Alex Goode
    Alex Lozowski
    Harry Thacker

  6. Just imagine if England coaches and people named Farrell could control their egos for one second Danny could have been tearing it up for England for a decade.

Instead tall poppy syndrome chopped his head off

  7. What a talent !! Never quite appreciated by the England set up because of his off field antics. The nearest thing we have to him is Marcus Smith. Get MS settled into the position now and let’s get the excitement back into the England side.

  8. The best player at keeping the ball in 2 hands. Genuinely never knew what he would do ball in hand. Kept everyone on their toes

  9. He must be a complete mare to work with since he's been either overlooked by England coaches or dropped by clubs. On the field though he is the best English 10 by a country mile. Comparisons to Finn Russel are obvious because as he has an instinct for opening defences and smart enough to look/plan what he will do with the ball before he gets it, something Farrell has never done and Marcus Smith is only a little better at. Im a Sarries man and over the years have seen him play for different clubs which have often been second best in the pack to Saracens but he's managed still to threat with crap ball and a daring that obviously goes against the grain with England selectors. I think Eddie Jones only ever selected him on the bench and brought him on as a full back replacement. with Farrell still on the park… like going on the pull with the elephant man as your mate

  10. 4:46 Great pace and an effective tackle, but why on Earth did the greedy bar steward not pass?!? Even if he was unaware of Cipriani, he’d already done enough to draw the defender, just put your mate through in space.

  11. Overrated. What I mean by this is that he was a great prem level flyhalf, but in the 16 games I saw him play for England, I never once though he was the answer, or as good as other world class flyhalfs.

  12. Danny being side lined from England displays everything wrong with its management. Talk about trying to grow the game. This guy had everything from incredible talent to interesting personality but the powers at be decided the pesonality that captivated the public didn’t fit.

  13. Always remember having my first Saturday job followed by going home to watch wasps play. Never a boring game when he was playing.

That 2007ish wasps team was unbelievable to watch when I look back at now
