  1. LVG was something else at Manchester United. 14/15 was a huge missed opportunity to compete for the Premier League title especially with the players we had granted not as strong as Chelsea and City at the time. He record against the big 6 is incredible. Done the double on Liverpool twice, beat Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs and drawn against a very strong Chelsea team.

15/16 everything went downhill from there. Sold most of the good players and replaced them with dross. Schneiderlin, Darmian and Memphis were awful, Schweinsteiger was passed his best, Martial was raw and Romero was the only good signing he made. De Gea could have joined Madrid had the fax machine worked. It was the worst football I've ever watched. Losing to inferior sides for fun, failing to qualify for the knock outs in a very easy group and playing players out of position. We played possession football without any attacking threat. After failing to qualify for the Champions League his fate was sealed despite winning the FA Cup and was sacked an hour after the win. LVG was done dirty after the FA Cup triumph however he should have been sacked six months earlier after losing to Norwich. The 15/16 season became the start of the endless cycle of poor planning and recruitment that still haunts us today. While Moyes was the symbol of our decline, LVG became the symbol of poor recruiting and planning.

  2. For me Van Gaal had the biggest re-build job at United since Ferguson left because he effectively had the first “re-build”. When you look at the amount of players that both left and arrived in his 2 years at the club the turnover is off the charts. Players he should never have got rid of were Evans, Evra, Hernandez and Di Maria.

As mentioned in the video he did tinker with formations a lot especially in his first season which caused instability in the team, he did settle on the 4-2-3-1 in his second season, although I would say he was not helped with injuries in the whole of his first season and then the middle part of the second season. However, with that said he had got rid of that many senior players by that second season he shot himself in the foot really.

Which brings me onto my next point, he always referred to his “philosophy” and I recall him saying this many times he stated his intention of having the first 11, around 5 squad players and then the rest was promoting youth – which tbf I actually agree with, the problem with this is as I say he got rid of and signed not good players to fit with this idea. A prime example would be that summer of 2015 gets rid of Hernandez, Van Persie and Falcao, leaving Rooney (whose legs could no longer play ST) Martial and Wilson as the senior strikers for the club at the beginning of the season!

With all the mess that Van Gaal caused it then left Mourinho to inherit a squad of players that did not fit his system and this has been recurring in all the managers ever since which has been almost 10 years due to the ownership constantly changing manager every 2-3 years!

Mourinho was the one they should have backed him for like 4 years, in the end they backed Ole the most in which in his first 18 months I liked the clear out he did with the squad but towards the end he made bad signings also.

In the end I think a lot of the mess player wise stems from Van Gaals time at the club and his successors have been left to pick up the pieces ever since.

There are other examples of when a manager has left a club with something to work with: look at Real Madrid in 2013 Mourinho left a solid squad for Ancelotti to win UCL, Chelsea in 2004 Ranieri left decent squad which Mourinho only needed like 5 signings to win them the league, City in 2016 Pellegrini left a team still with Silva, Aguero, De Bruyne, Fernandinho, Kompany, to work with it was only really the defence needing upgraded

The only manager who inherited a mess and made it work was Klopp and he got given the time!

  3. LVG deserves more respect, it was unfortunate for me as a United fan that they sacked him the way he did, the football was boring at times (2nd season especially) 1st season was quite good, he also delivered a Cup win so there's that, but the best thing about him was the big games against English teams, I mean he was undefeated in his two years against Liverpool (granted they weren't that great) but he's the last Man United manager to win there, the 4-2 win against City is also a memorable one as well

  4. You missed one point though. Ofcourse a rebuild was necessary. But to build his own Manchester United side, he offloaded many players, who used to breathe Man United. Chicharito, rafael for example. Maybe these players could have stayed and groomed the younger players.

  5. van gaal era is the most boring united era i had ever watch, i remember that we passing 60 times before every shots. i take any other manager era than van gaal man, im sorry

  6. van gaal era is the most boring united era i had ever watch, i remember that we passing 60 times before every shots. i take any other manager era than van gaal man, im sorry

  7. i watched 2 interviews from LVG about the Dutch national team subbing goalkeepers for pen shootout. MF says, it was a tactical move on our part. we practiced with that gk for pens spesifically, we knew what we were doing. then almost 9months later he does another interview. "penalties are a guessing game. you can never be prepared for what is to come" i fucking died laughing at this bastard. greatest comedian alive.

  8. I think with hindsight, he should have given another season. Van Gaal season 3 would've been interesting. Ultimately José Mourinho being unemployed and horrid December sealed his fate. Great video by the way. Keep the red flag flying high! 🚩

  9. Most of the language shenanigans follows from Van Gaal translating (often poorly) from Dutch mannerisms. Being 'horny for the goal' albeit a bit unflattering, is an acceptable thing to state in The Netherlands.

Van Gaal can be abrasive for some; but he is a man of extremes. He can be brutally honest sometimes, but is also a very kind man. He is rude to the public media; but especially caring for his team indoors. He can come across as vain and often states he thinks himself to be quite great; but he understands a lot of things are out of his control or skill set. He has always been willing to learn and implement new tech, even at a much older age. He's an interesting character.

  10. I didn't watch the video yet, but both brazilians and argentinians players whom played under him hates him and say he's xenophobic, and once you're able to unite brazilians and argentinians at football, that's probably an accurate opinion

  11. LVG was definitely on to something at United, he trusted the youth and improved players he just didnt have the fire power upfront to really implement his style to the fullest. Top manager, football will miss this character

  12. You seemed to take joy is describing Stevie G sending off lol
Not sure if you’ve already done one but if so I can’t find it, can you do one on how Bill Shankly changed Liverpool? Or how a Liverpool legend in Matt Busby become a united manager

  13. Sacking LVG to get Mourinho was a horrible mistake tbh. LVG was building something long-term while Mourinho was only there to squeeze the juice and left once there was nothing left to squeeze, leaving behind a disaster

  14. Watching LVG build a team around youth and giving players a chance might have been boring, but it was never a good idea to follow that up with a coach known for prioritising short term success.

It felt like LVG was building something that another manger could exploit and turn into a long term project, but instead we got Mourinho. I called it at the time, it was the wrong decision t replace LVG with him.
