  1. Unsure how it couldn't be Arena. Maybe 2006 didn't work out – they bottled it vs. Ghana. But in the run up he won a Gold Cup and finished first in CONCACAF qualifying with games to spare. And 2018 was a disaster but 2018 wasn't 100% his fault. But it's more than that. Arena came in after an EMBARRASSING France 98, an MLS in contraction mode, and a USA that was down. Unlike Berhalter, he had pedigree. He had won consecutive NCAA championships, moved into the fledgling MLS, and established himself as a winner there right away too. Arena made it possible for the USA team to believe they could play and defeat Mexico Can't say it enough… this guy really is one of the 'fathers of American soccer'. Harkes, Agoos, Meola, Reyna, Onalfo – he helped develop them all in a time where development was almost nothing. No manager is perfect of course. But he's one of the USA's greats.

Berhalter had by FAR the best players the USA have ever had. And he had off the field issues and was woefully outmaneuvered vs. a beatable Wales, barely beat Iran and was embarrassed by the Netherlands in the WAY they lost. He did some terrific things in CONCACAF but even qualifying was spotty at times. And for pedigree, he didn't have it. Arena, Bradley… Bora and even Klinsmann had some background. Berhalter not so much. His brother had clout though with the USSF. He's maybe level with Gansler in a way (guy left off Perez in 1990!) BUT at least he has the honor of breaking a multi decade no qualifying curse!

  2. Did Herc not understand what Luchi Gonzalez said? He said "Gregg Berhalter is ONE of the greatest coaches ever for the U.S.," and then Herc said, "Berhalter isn't THE greatest U.S. coach of all time." It boggles the mind how people won't listen and argue with imaginary points.

  3. To use the word “greatest” and USMNT coach makes you feel dirty, like you need a shower! Come on, Just use the word “ best”!

  4. what a tough choice having to pick from bunch of mediocre managers. just go to nearest kfc and ask for the manager he or she wont do a worse job

  5. Give Herc the host position for futbol Americas…the others barely have the knowledge and usually don't know what their talking about and sebs a control freak who thinks he's always right. If you don't give him tht title then move him over to ESPN FC and change one of those guys out!

  6. Bruce also dealt with seasoned players. Experienced players. Leaders who played for quality clubs and had been to world cups. You can't say he has the best squad so he did the worst and then turn around and say this team was very green. Green teams require a lot more patience and coaching than a seasoned team. Bradley did well but deployed a very defensive style. Gregg is one of the best in USMNT history. Maybe not the best but still in the conversation. Arenas legacy shouldn't be remembered well as his last two cycles ended miserably. He failed massively in the 06 WC. And he led the failure that was 2018. Klinsmann had a ton of controversy during his time and started off his second cycle horribly. They are all in the conversation. You could probably include Bora in there too. They all did good things and really horrible things. I DO agree that US Soccer needs to go a different direction though. I'd like to see someone else

  7. Greg has 10 times the amount of players playing in Major leagues in Europe over anyone in concacaf and he got 3rd in concacaf qualifying. That’s fuckn terrible. He’s a bad coach hidden by a talented roster.

  8. john herdman is a great example of a coach the US needs, he a took a Canada team with less talent than the US and mexico and made them a Concacaf powerhouse top of qualifying

  9. Bruce Arena cause USMNT had reached the quarterfinals after defeating big rivals Mexico.
Jurgen Klinsmann cause USMNT had reached the semifinals of Copa America Centenario, where they lost to Lionel Messi's Argentina.

  10. It's about time! This topic memorializing and glorifying American soccer coach and players need more media coverage. Gregg Beghalter and others need greater media coverage. Gregg is definitely not the greatest of all time, based on everything Herculez points out. Who is the greatest USMNT striker of all time? Who is the greatest USMNT goalkeeper of all time? Who is the greatest of all time, mid field player or defensive back? Who is the greatest USMNT player of all time?

  11. Y’all overhype this generation too much. Your important players are all in relegation battles or can’t establish themselves on decent teams. Past generations have been better.
This means Berhalter did get this team to punch above their weight. Y’all should appreciate him more

  12. Tuchel, come join us. i hear they have some nice auyurvedic centers in beautiful chicago..not to mention the bracing winters are to very healthy on the body! You'll love living there. London has nothing on a real 'murican city. Forget Cheslea, you'll be living on the South Side and enjouing life!
