Berhalter was a good stepping stone. But we need to step up once again. We need someone who can change his game plan on the fly if need be in a game. He is not that guy
The potential is there for the U.S. But, currently they’re not good enough. If they would have somehow beaten the Netherlands, this squad wouldn’t have beaten the elite teams. I get a sense that some correlate the World Cup to the ncaa tournament. It’s not the same thing. There’s almost never a “Cinderella “ squad that upsets two or three giants in a row.
im really intrested to know as not a yank what yanks want or are expecthing from wc 2026 coz that all they talk about like ready to do what are they expecting to win something😂😂
It's not muppets. I was against this coach since day 1 when he was hired by his brother. How is it that corruption and nepotism isn't even mentioned in the MLS run soccer media in the US?
The US had a chance to beat the Netherlands, but Berhalter did not play his best guys. Why put Reyna in at all, Berhalter? So, you only trust him when you REALLY need him? Then, he gets in and creates all sorts of chances. Champions League soccer must not mean much to Gregg. Also, who in their right mind doesn't put Carter-Vickers on their back line when pitbulls like Memphis are on the field? Our MLS guys looked out of sorts, and, at times, flat-out terrified (not just the defenders).
Gab Marcotti always comes off as insufferable with his back-handed comments whenever someone disagrees with him ("muppets" "fools") and this is true about Berhalter criticism. It's also clear as day that despite being a hyphenated-American (who is much more vocal about his Scottish/Italian roots than his own American upbringing) that Marcotti does not follow the USMNT closely. The fact that he thinks Berhalter has been amazing means he's only looking at the results and not looking at the performances throughout his time as coach.
We were terrible, awful in almost every second half at the world cup. The only reason we got through is that despite the awful FIFA rankings saying that we were in the "toughest ranked" group, in reality we face pitiful teams like Wales and Iran that we should've beaten comfortable. Berhalter was also coached out of the gates by Louis Van Gaal who chose to sat back against us and watch Berhalter's perfect Plan A crumble in front of his eyes. He has consistently shown to be an awful manager when it comes to being flexible. That's why we can't allow him to continue in 2026.
Berhalter should be let go with thanks. He's gone as far as he's capable and has shown the world his limit. His management is naive and uncultured, and US players have already left him far behind… with a lot more talent coming up. They deserve a quality manager.
I don't wish Berhalter ill, but he should really go back to mls where he could probably achieve some success.
No. He got the job because of his brother and he probably didn’t deserve an interview. A lot of bad managers could win because of these players.
In the World Cup it’s all about minute details and margins. There’s not a lot of room for error. And in every way a manager could help his team Greg has proven over time he’s not good.
His lineup for the group stages were great. Subs and timing awful more so than not. Anyone who thinks taking Ferreira and Morris over Pefok and Pepi was smart are kidding themselves.
Everytime he tries to explain his decisions he makes himself sound dumber than he looks. He either lies or makes up some stupid reasoning that is more eye opening than whatever he did.
The educated fan isn’t happy with him. The casual fan cheers for him because he’s the US coach so he must be good to be there right? 🤦🏻♂️
Here's the thing. I don't think he's a bad manager at all. It's just that he hasn't got a lot of coaching experience. The cups over for him, is what it is. I can see him wanting to be on the touchline daily and it'll make him better. Then in the future who knows. I'm not a big fan of continuing on after one Cup.
Berhalter was made a fool by van gaal in the postgame. Starting mls players in positions where it’s clear and obvious that they can’t handle the speed and physicality of the game at the international level. He couldn’t adapt ingame tactics and couldn’t put subs in at the right time or make the correct subs. He was a product of nepotism within the federation as his bigwig bro got him the job. Trying to tell the fan base that coaches like Roberto Martinez or Lopetegui aren’t even worth interviewing is ludicrous and shows the stupidity within the top brass of the ussf. Berhalters only success is the recruitment of dual nationals which will help this team significantly. Credit where it’s due. Here’s to the future of us soccer and wising up and hiring a proper manager to make a big run in 2026.
We haven't got past the round of 16 since 2002. I think we have the best team we've ever had. I think it's fair to say that mistakes were made with the lineup and tactics against H
Most U.S players are more advanced than their coach. We need to upgrade to a coach that has coached at a higher level. Amazing how these non Americans are satisfied with our mediocre coach. These are the same folks who are calling for Southgate’s head on a platter. They are happy to keep the USMNT on a lower rung of the ladder than our European counterparts.
How I can tell you don't know anything about soccer:
1) You insist that the issue is I call Association Football "soccer". 2) You insist that this is the most talented team we've ever had. 3) You insist that we need a new coach, and you name someone like Marsh, Bielsa, Sampaoli, or Guardiola. 4) You insist that we need a new coach, and you think we are going to get someone significantly better for the job, you just don't know who that person is. 5) You think Gregg has achieved the "bare minimum". 6) You think Gregg we lost to the Netherlands because of MLS players. 7) You think there is some secret formula of callups or tactics that would have allowed us to win the World Cup this year, and not only that, you think you know what the secret was. 8) All of your arguments are arguments from the counter-factual, based on "what if" scenarios that you confidently predict and treat as evidence of your point of view.
In short, pretty much all of you in the comments are obviously clueless.
Anyone who knows soccer understands that Berhalter isnt the guy. He was outcoached made little adjustments and his in-game adjustments were atrocious. He made bad team choices.
Berhalter is alright but he isn’t the coach to lead us to success at a wc. Yes we made it out the group and into the knockouts unlike the other concacaf teams, but his tactics aren’t it. He doesn’t want to score. He settles with draws and low score lines when we could dominate a game and seal it off. And his selections, Ferreira over Reyna vs the Netherlands??!? Disgraceful. Wasted a 45 with Ferreira at the top
This was a good step, he is far from the best coach, but this was all just trying to get back to the WC (and ideally get to the rd of 16 which we did). This WC, in a way, put us back on the map with us making the rd of 16, drawing with England, and having a young squad that will mostly be in their primes ages for 2026 (which we do not even have to qualify for which is a plus for the job). The position is much more attractive now than back in 2019, so it can totally do better with someone who can take us to that next step (and no I am not saying we can/will win the tournament but just not being the underdog in almost every game)
Berhalter did good. Happy with the overall performance of the US. The last game against the Netherlands was disappointing. It seems Berhalter got tactically out coached and it was a little easy for the Dutch. But the team is young. Would like to see a new coach with new ideas, not because Berhalter was terrible, but a 2nd cycle is good for players to hear a new message.
It’s laughable that you think you know more than us just because we parachute in for the World Cup. It’s a game. A very simple game that even the smallest of children understand. Soccer not rocket science. I started playing at 5, and watching the World Cup in 1994.
The truth is this was a Dutch side that had looked vulnerable, the the US picked a bad day to not play at their best. And it is absolutely reasonable for hardcore and casual fans alike to expect the US side to play at their best in the knockout round of the World Cup. They didn’t perform well against the Dutch, and part of that is in the coach, in the humble opinion of this “casual fan”
Gregg is a great recruiter. Musah, dest, pepi just to name a few, have to give some credit to Gregg. However, he’s just not a great tactician. Would be cool if he can be involved in the scout and recruiting going forward but just not as manager
The US need a world-class striker to compliment the high energy they bring and the chances they create. No amount of coaching from a "top international coach" will help that. The US side did well to get out of their group, but they aren't an elite football team yet. To win a WC, you need world-class players in at least 7 or 8 positions. The US currently have 2 or 3 right now.
I don’t believe commentators can just look at the final result and Berhalter was great. He called off the dogs against Wales instead of playing for the win. That game was winnable based on 1st half. England was “possibly” winnable if we had tried. The last 20 minutes drama versus Iran was unnecessary. Our CONCACAF play was inconsistent, overly cautious & sometimes gag worthy. Instead of coaching to 10, Berhalter coaches to a safe 7.5. We could be better if better utilized. Fine overall result but there is a better team there waiting to get out. Berhalter is not the guy to get us to the next level, to 10.
I am getting tired of these “pundits” who think they know the US Soccer community. The US soccer community does not like Gregg, the casual fans and the experienced fans are in on this together!! Stop this BS, the US could’ve played a million times better against Holland. SUBBING JORDAN MORRIS ON OVER REYNA IS NOT OKAY IN THE GROUP STAGE.
Kasey Keller, Who set those goals! There are more than two goals! I didn't as a fan! I've been getting stick since the late 1980's by work colleagues( I work in Silicon Valley, a high percentage are from football countries; I played rec league in San Jose for a few years.) about USA soccer. We barely qualified. Greg wasn't able to find a cohesive group prior to the WC . All of the sudden he brings Tim Ream and Haji Wright! No playing time prior with the Team! He can't figure out how to use Gio? With these quality players we should have breezed through WC qualifying. The reality is our best team was 2002 period! Bruce Arena had the team almost beat Germany in the Quarter finals! On paper with players of less quality. Craig, your working for ESPN!!! Its an American network, What the F is the big surprise? We want to know about the US team , and God Love him* Christian freakin Pulisic! 🙂
Berhalter picked the wrong group of players. Pepi left out and he picks Jordan Morris instead which just blew me away. He needs to learn Mls players are not going to do as well against top teams. European leagues are way ahead of Mls!!! I'm sorry and I wish wish wish they'd get a Roberto Martinez or my ultimate coach pep guardiola!! I can wish but Berhalter is way out of his league and experience!! We have too many talented players for him to screw up.
I remember the media saying Klingsman was the answer to USMNT then Arena, and we missed the World Cup. Now we hv a winner with a young team & they want to dismiss Ber for spoil brat?

We need to fire him and get Jesse Marsch
Berhalter was a good stepping stone. But we need to step up once again. We need someone who can change his game plan on the fly if need be in a game. He is not that guy
“We had two goals…”
Literally. We literally scored two goals in four matches. Just not good enough.
Why are these idiots ok with our team underproducing and barely scraping by in a pretty easy group?
The potential is there for the U.S. But, currently they’re not good enough. If they would have somehow beaten the Netherlands, this squad wouldn’t have beaten the elite teams. These “analysts” are clueless. If they knew, if they only knew.
The Columbus Crew job is open he should take it.
Who cares? Just as long as he's someone else's nightmare.

Maybe his brother can get him a job coaching in MLS just like he got him the job coaching USMNT – something he was utterly unqualified to do.
Gregg did his job and got us past group. However he is not a WC winning coach by any stretch so we need a new one.
Gab Marcotti always comes off as insufferable with his back-handed comments whenever someone disagrees with him ("muppets" "fools") and this is true about Berhalter criticism. lmao, gregg doesn't know how to adapt within a game. Aaronson and reyna should have started vs Holland.

These takes were disappointing but what I expected. Gregg has got to go, we will stagnate heavily if he doesn’t.

Why do I laugh just looking at Burley. He's like, "Tommy Lee Jones funny."
Anyone who knows soccer understands that Berhalter isnt the guy. He was outcoached made little adjustments and his in-game adjustments were atrocious. He made bad team choices.
he needs to get the death penalty
USA should get Jose Mourinho

This is why I rarely listen to these mainstream clowns. Berhalter should be nowhere near the national team. Not sure who's paying them to prop him up.
