Can't believe I'm actually saying this but after watching this compilation something occurred to me that I haven't noticed before: Mbappe is nowhere near his true speed when on the ball – in other words, he could be faster (which is insane to even think of…)
If you watch his runs when he's up against tighter spaces or he's in range of defender contacts, he's keeping close control of the ball at speed and is easily beating the defenders BUT, his touches are so wasteful and unprecise that he has to several times re-accelerate which costs him momentum, energy and most importantly speed. In comparison, Messi's runs seem like a continuous acceleration to top speed then maintaining that top speed with close control in any space, it's less jittery and more fluid. Same goes to Henry (Pato was also a good example) or Ronaldo Nazario.
If he could clean up his ball control, he could be even faster than he is right now, scary thought knowing that he's an elite speedster even amongst some of the "cheetahs" of the current era of football…
