With this lineup of Freeman and Weah on the wings we just don't have anyone that can beat a defender one v one.
Saying it here. Roldan will make the World Cup team as a bench player and Poch will bring him in off the bench for some games.
Richards & Roldan were flailing on their goal & both let the guy dribble too deep. Richards also got megged w the yellow. Versus Ecuador his positioning vs Valencia was awful & got spun. Is he our best defender? Yes. He's absolutely not good enough though to be the #1 defender for a team looking to advance to the QF/SF of a WC
Mckenzie tonight was not good. Watch the game again. His passing was off & defending below avg. I kept saying all game how much better Ream is & I'm no Ream fan. Ream's distribution & tactical awareness is light years better than Mark's. Robinson & Freeman were both God awful like usual. Only difference is Alex being much younger has many yrs to improve. Freese is awful w his feet. 2 or 3 kicks went OOB & a few went up field to no one
I thought Luna was decent. He held the ball well and he had some nice passes. Plus two shots on goal.
Tessman was bad. A bad giveway and a few close calls.
The US deserved it, Australia in any sport despite any shortcomings have this gritty mentality where theyll give anybody a fight unless the opposition is good enough to blow the doors off early, it was a solid win for you guys
Freeman not only got beaten several times, he got beaten for pace, which is supposed to be one of his strengths.
McKenzie was better than Robinson.
Tessman is better than Morris but I'm not sure Pochettino sees it that way.
CCV and Agyemang were the only two outfield players who did not get any minutes.
I would not judge Pulisic's performance too negatively. He did not have normal levels of protection from the referee. He did not have Tillman or Balogun to play off/with. Not getting to see the three of them build chemistry was about my only disappointment in this game.
Joe Scally would’ve scored 10 goals and 12 bycicle kicks
If no Jedi in WC I would imagine Dest and Weah as fullbacks or wingbacks. Who knows, maybe Poch would even bring Scally if no Arob.
Ugh. The know nothing "tactical manager." Who the heck listens to this guy. His takes are CRINGY. Lol
I watched it in a bar with crappy TV so I couldn't always tell who was who, but do you guys think Richards looking less than his usual self could be not having the calming presence of Tim Ream? Ream is typically very calm with the ball under pressure and does better with the line breaking passes. I know everyone wants to shit on Team because he's old, but he's so consistent with the national team and he seems to bring a calming force to the back line.
I wish we had a couple more CBs to lean on though. I really want to see Banks play with the squad next camp.
You mean Roldan masterclass?
2014 Germany took along Podolski as a good locker room guy – not for his quality at that point. Maybe Roldan same role with US in 2026?
Still some things to clean up, especially with back 3 formation, which im ok with overall. This is the time to learn and clean up but by spring we shouldn't have the messiness. We have had some serious momentum now for the past 3 games which is what we want. The overall level has been higher. You can just see it. Guys coming off the bench are lively and attacking and making things happen which is what bench guys should be doing and doing it effectively. We are having good depth now.
Positives this window- overall striker depth- Loved that Poch started Wright this 2nd game to give him the opportunity and he seized it. Midfield competition is gonna be great come March window. Back 3 still needs some work but it seems to be our best overall formation. Great to see we are playing well and winning without Pulisic and starters like Adams Jedi and Dest. Shows we have quality and depth. November camp roster will be interesting to watch. Its starting to form and starting to get exicting
Great win for us! Go USA!
Richard was heated he wasn't composed
Aaronson was way better than Luna lol definitely ahead of Luna in the pecking order after tonight
29:21 I think I understand what he saying because Landon use to be invisible for large portions of the game consistently, but would have big moments out of nowhere
"I don't form my opinions off one game" Ok then, keep that same energy if Gio's bum ass cons his way into another call up.
Roldan will be in the Roster
Again, BA playing LWB is not something I saw coming but it was decent and interesting
8 is crazy for Roldan. 2 good assists. Multiple head scratching giveaways in possession.
Christian Roldan has had a good season against MLS competition, and this Australia squad was more or less MLS-level competition.
You could react to the fact that Pulisic hasn't played a decent game with USMNT in a while. Too soft guy
Chris Richard’s is now my favorite player for standing up for his teammates and sending a message with his foul right before HT. He should be the team captain moving forward.
Never forget emu wars
I'd actually rank Poch far lower, even (or especially) given the generally positive performances in these two games.
Reason being, I think the adjustment to a 3 CB formation has been the primary catalyst to our improved play, but that it's been an adjustment many non-professional observers have been suggesting all the way back to GGG's tenure. I'm not eager to give someone with Poch's experience much credit for doing something that much of the fanbase would have already had in place many months ago.
Additionally, Poch is still experimenting far too much with the personnel used, whether who the back 3 are, or who the wingbacks and double pivots are. Or even what the structure looks like in the offensive 3rd and how we best attack within this formation versus different style opponents.
The results are that we are in that early stage where we have clear moments of disorganization, demonstrated in the goals we gave up in these games, as well as several other moments where it was clear we don't have good cohesion yet, and certainly would be taken advantage of by better offensive teams.
The lost time we could have already been taking advantage of is going to be a large contributer to our inevitable struggles at the WC.
Tac is right in saying that the defensive errors are easier to resolve compared to not having adequate offensive capabilities. But, you don't really resolve those defensive errors with respect to spacing, roles, risk aversion, recognition of new situations, etc. without sufficient time together on the field. I fear Poch's inability to see (or resistence to trying) this option earlier, as well as to refine the roster and starting 11 to more consistent choices will have left us with too little time to sort these things out as well as we could have. This isn't club soccer where the team is training together every week and will have 30-40 games before next summer.
Walker Zimmermann literally saved us against England but of course braindead Palestine supporter Pete forgets that! what a joke
The problem with you two as critics is that you often exaggerate your claim. Our WC 2022 squad was made up of who we had, and in some cases there wasn't a better player for the 2nd string. Go find who should have been 2nd DM over Acosta. I'll wait.
No, wait, I won't wait because you won't find anyone. Neither McKennie nor Musah nor de la Torre were better options than Acosta, who was more well-rounded and hard-nosed and a better defender than any of them. Saying that Acosta had no business being at the World Cup just makes you sound like snobs and brats. Go watch McKennie's defensive runs as an 8 in the Netherlands game and see how dumb and late they are. You couldn't pay him to sprint at our goal when we were in trouble. Musah had more missing parts of his game than Acosta, and de la Torre was less athletic. Musah and de la Torre were worse with mid to long range passes.
There was no one else, and so talking like someone's not good enough for you makes you sound like princesses sometimes. Similarly with Roldan, we can name people who are better for the double pivot now, namely Adams, Cardoso and Tessman. After that it's really anyone's pick as to what strengths and weaknesses you want at that 4th 6/8. You can't name anyone hands-down better than Roldan after those first 3. Do we need 4 there on a WC roster? Probably not. But it's not impossible that a player peaks late and a program doesn't have anyone better.
You are on Arfsten as 2nd LWB, but you didn't have a word to say about how bad Weah was at LWB yesterday. We don't have a better LWB after Robinson and Dest. You go with who you have.
The remedy for the pointless support from other parts of usmnt media isn't pointless criticism from you two. It's accurate criticism. Do better. Hot takes aren't strong takes.
Jesus Christ… soooo much Roldan talk. Guys, he is a 30 year old MLS lifer who, has Pete said, had his FIRST good game in 40 caps while being horrendous in just about every other one. He had a nice game, sure. For once he actually looked up the field and didn’t just pass it backwards or to the other team. He made some nice passes to his playmakers in the final third which is great, but make no mistake Haji scored those goals because he was extremely prolific, not because Roldan got him so wide open or did anything so brilliant (especially the second goal). Sure, these performance can potentially justify him being on a 26 man roster, but we already very much know what we have in Roldan and he simply is not good enough to play in the World Cup. He is 30, he’s not some kid with untapped potential.
We have four midfielders who start for Juventus, Lyon, Bournemouth, and Atletico Madrid for Christ sakes. It’s these four that need to make up our starting double pivot and two good solutions off the bench. At the 10 it’s Tillman, Aaronson and maybe Reyna, I don’t love Weston there. It’s really straight forward guys. He had a good game but it doesn’t change the depth chart at all. regardless of his performance I don’t think it is smart of poch to be starting him in these types of games. With Adams and Cardoso out I guess I let it slide, but he not only doesn’t move the needle for this national team, he more times than not is a liability. We have lots of talent at that position and if we are fully healthy we need to use these camps to determine the best duo between Adams, Johnny, Weston and Tessman. I can live with Roldan being brought in over Musah but the fact remains neither should get on the field anyway.
The insane reaction to Roldan’s game actually highlights just how awful he has been for so long. He’s a 30 year old soccer pro, you’d hope he occasionally has a good game and after years of getting more chances than he deserves (40 caps!!) he finally has one… good for him.
Please don’t listen to these two dumbasses. They genuinely have such terrible takes. Christian Roldan didn’t look out of play at the club World Cup against Botafogo, Atlético de madrid and PSG. Arguably the best player for Seattle during that tournament. He can play and this is coming from someone who didn’t want him on the national team
How does it feel that your best player Pulisic has a body of a 13 year-old girl? Weakest footballer in history. irankunda at 19 was running for your defence like a brick wall.
Hey 11 Yanks. Is there a chance you could do a singular livestream where subscribers can ask you questions free of cost. I love your coverage as well as Tacs and just want 1 chance to asks you questions without a pay grade. Nonetheless love your work keep it up.
For our back three either Ream, Richards McKennzie / Ream, Richards, Scally or McKennzie, Richards Scally. This allows you to play Dest, Weah or Musah as the WB in a 3-4-2-1.
