Dave Roberts discusses Roki Sasaki’s outing vs the Rangers, pointing to the swing-and-miss stuff and ability to limit damage, while noting that pitch count and efficiency remain the next step.

Roberts explains that the overall stuff continues to trend in the right direction, but getting ahead in counts and working deeper into games will be key moving forward.

He also addresses Edwin Díaz, keeping the update brief and not offering much detail on his current status or availability.

  1. Roki got himself into trouble today, a lot
… but he also got himself out of trouble too. It wasn't a horrible outing. He didn't choke or throw a fit and then had to be pulled. Had he kept his pitch count down, he would have easily lasted another inning. I think this is forward progress.
But please, please, someone get some meat on his skinny 'lil bones body. Have him come hang out over here on the east side. He needs a healthy Mexican diet of meat and beans!!!

Anyway, a lack of coordinated offense today, clearly unique to the Dodgers with trying to get runners around to home base versus long ball. This is the bane of the Dodgers existence.

  2. I think it might not be a bad thing to send him to AAA to work things out. He doesn't need to spend the whole season there, but he is clearly struggling and hasn't shown himself able to succeed at this level yet. He will get there, but he ain't there yet. Send him to the minors and give him a chance to work on his mechanics and confidence.

  3. Roki needs to focus on throwing in the zone. He’s too wild. He needs to challenge batters. Doc was fair in his assessment.

  4. Americans may not know this, but in Japan, Sasaki was protected to an extreme degree—pitching on long rest, avoiding heavy innings, and frequently missing time with physical issues. As a result, he accumulated barely 400 innings across four seasons, a shockingly small total for someone being marketed as an ace. Many Japanese fans never viewed him as a fully proven pitcher, and many question why the Dodgers committed to him despite his limited track record.
