What is the toughest weather you’ve ever had to battle through during a race? Let us know down below! 👇🏔️
My toughest race has been Vuelta al Aneto, Aragonese Pyrinees. 55k, +3500m, going up to more than 2600m above sea level, and the weather can be pretty nasty as well (as it was last year). Lots of climbing and descending on large boulders, impossible to run for a non-pro, and some parts as steep as 30 to 40%. A wonderful race.
Heather placed 12th woman, pretty impressive 🙂
Well done to both of you for getting around in that typical Eryri weather, for the time of year. The 'traffic' would have had a big impact on your times, so I wouldn't be too bothered by that.
How did you find using the poles, more help than hindrance and will you use them 'next time'?
Country to Capital 2023. Rained quite a lot all day and a consistent 20-25mph wind made for miserable conditions.
Thankfully it wasn’t too cold, stayed about 7-9C all day. Another 5C colder would have been absolutely awful.
My emotional rollercoaster watching this video
3:37 – No, please don’t taint trail running with this road running/triathlon competitiveness epidemic 😭
16:00 – Good choice, there's hope after all 🥳
20:45 – Sadness, opportunity lost
Heather taking off at the end like that is insanely impressive though 💪
You can bet the avg age is 5-7yrs younger on the 100km race. Both smart choosing the 56km option.
Well done to both of you. It looks amazing. Reminds me of my training in the military in Brecon as a young lad (especially the bad weather 😂). I was registered for another Ironman this year but had to defer also because of work & family commitments. Something like this looks like a great alternative to consider 👏🏻💪🏻
Wrong education to make ppl to gun for speed…injuries… stick with your triathlon matters
Well done you crazy cats!! maybe the next GTN Wales challenge could be the "ROC Wales triathlon"?
Good times. I was finished in 12 hours!
Well done both of you! Brutal Triathlon next? 😉
Great video Heather and James! Heather, pain is temporary but beating James is forever!!!
I need to see a montage-style compilation video of the next-day aftermath of one of these challenges. Struggling to get out of bed. Hobbling down a flight of stairs. Sitting down in a chair and not being able to get back up on your own
That’s me giving Heather her number at registration 😊 Amazing efforts both – Having done the 25K as a first-time visitor to that terrain in relatively nice weather, I simply can’t imagine how tough the longer distances must’ve been in those conditions!
Am I wrong to be inspired to run this now?
This is no where near the toughest ultra in the UK. There’s a 215 mile run across Scotland. There’s a 168 mile run from the south of England to Scotland. You’re just building yourself up to get a pat on the back.
That was so much fun to watch!
Great job you two!!! Most of us out here would be crushed by just the distance alone on a smooth, flat, dry bridal way. Very inspiring! Love the competitive spirit, Heather!!
Congratulations! Come to Switzerland and try a run at high altitude 😊 🎉😊
Congrats both! Thanks James for helping me with my poles, whilst I helped you with your jacket on that grim climb up the Watkin Path! That race was BRUTAL!!!
I really enjoyed this video. What a fun (by some definition, type) experience. I’d love to give it a try.
Glad to have shared some chat with you, James – just past AS2 on the way up. Oh, also I'm pleased it wasn't just me struggling down that last muddy descent, that was brutal. Ps. How did the ice bath (swim) fare? Well done to you both!
Good for you to chose to enjoy the race! The true win!
James. Thanks for taking photos of me on last peak. I finished close behind at 9.01
Great couple. Great video. Thanks GTN
"Welcome to Wales" & "Terrible use of free will" man here. Congratulations both on getting through a brutal race in heinous conditions, in impressive times. Like James, the decision not to put on gloves until the summit, and a jacket on 2/3rds of the way up the second climb was a terrible one. When I was passing James I couldn't feel my hands and the humour was about the only thing pushing me through.
Congrats Heather and James! Loved the x2 math conversion 😂. You both walking down the stairs at the end of the video was the real trail running prize! Cheers!
I was watching another guy doing this race on his YouTube channel, and he said the quote ‘terrible use of free will’ but then I see another guy in the same race on this channel using the same quote. My question is: who’s copying who and who said the quote first? 🤔
James won the "life" challenge. Sometimes, it is not about winning but about facing challenges with your friends. In fact, I might argue that it's what "mankind" is about.
love the format. fun to watch
"everything is fine, nothing to see here" 😅
Briliiant video 👏👊…..Hope to see GTN at OCC 2027 👊
Shout out to the camera crew. I saw one running up the first climb and gave him kudos. Then we had a chat at the top of the climb. Really friendly guy and fair play for going up and down carrying the equipment!
This confirms I will never do an ultra.
Whyyyyy are there always drummers at running events. It’s so specific
If you’re in doubt, always remember that goggins Mr. 40 % was hallucinating after giving his 100%
You guys are awesome! What a race! Great competition between you two and….What a finish 🥳! Heather is definitely hard to beat 💪🏽. Hope you enjoyed to polar plunge James. Camera man… you deserve an award 😂.
The traffic jams looked horrendous. I am surprised there was so many people hiking given the horrific weather. It's a wonder they don't set the race off earlier given what a popular tourist area it is.
Hmmmm, this race is going on my bucket list!
Shame they compromised the route to flood the numbers. Corporate ultra
Heather is awesome!! But, I come here for James' honest updates and resilience throughout an event.
I finished the Yr Wydffa Ultra 50 mile last year and the pyg track, heather terrace, tryfan and devils pass are no joke.
Awesome, loved it!
Did it last year in the extreme heat. Was pretty brutal but also kinda fun
