Diogo Dalot has shared an emotional tribute to his late Portugal teammate Diogo Jota, revealing how deeply the squad was affected by his passing. “This summer will be very different. We won’t just have 26 players. We will be 26 + 1.
When we lost Diogo Jota last summer, I refused to believe it. I was training on my own in Portugal when I checked my phone and saw around 10 messages from Claudia. I called Bruno. I texted anyone who might know something. Even when his death was confirmed, it hurt too much for it to feel real.
Just a few weeks earlier, we had celebrated winning the Nations League together. I can still see him beside me, lifting the trophy and dancing under the confetti. He had just gotten married. He had three wonderful children. At 28 years old, he still had so much left to give.
It was an honor to be his teammate. I remember one of the first times we were together on the bench for Portugal, just watching the match as usual. There was a throw-in against us. Out of nowhere, Diogo jumped out of his seat, ran to the touchline and started shouting at the fourth official.
‘How can you not see that?? When are you going to give us something?? Come on!’
I told him, ‘He’s dealing with it!’
‘He clearly touched it!! I saw it from the bench!’
Oh, and I forgot to mention… it was a friendly match…
That was Diogo in one picture. We all knew he deserved to play more for Portugal, but even from the bench he was humble enough to help the team. I think all we can do now is chase his dream. He wanted so badly to see Portugal become world champions. We will not only fight for our country. We will fight for Diogo.”
