Even more astonishing was Messi’s challenge on the Algerian defender — a high, studs-up strike into the back of the leg, behind the knee. That wasn’t “letting the game flow”; it was a refereeing collapse so severe that it changed the course of the match. He should have been walking down the tunnel, not completing a hat-trick. Ismaël Koné’s broken leg against Qatar marks the moment the tournament’s moral restraint disappeared — the point at which players effectively received a silent green light to go all in. From then on, the message was unmistakable: brutality would be tolerated. The consequences have been stark. This World Cup has resembled a return to the dark days of Claudio Gentile and Andoni Goikoetxea, when crippling an opponent could be treated as a legitimate tactical choice. I blame much of this on the global culture of football. Players are sometimes rude and disrespectful towards their opponents and towards the officials, and they are accustomed to committing intentional fouls with no consequences.. it’s up to FIFA to change that culture from the top down. When a player commits a foul on another player he should be immediately red carded and penalized by not being allowed to play in competition for at least 30 days. However his team should have to continue to pay his salary. If the club owners and FIFA start to feel pain in the pocketbook, things will change very quickly indeed. The other problem is the bloodthirsty fans who act as if it’s a good thing when one of “ our boys” takes out one the opponents
It was given as a Yellow on the field (the tackle on Koné); but then after the Canadian coaches complained, it was changed to a red. It looks like a very innocuous challenge, not a red card. I thought Qatar were unlucky with the decision.
A red card was not necessary
We didn’t hear or read any outrage when the Manchester City goalkeeper made a reckless challenge on Paris Saint-Germain’s Achraf Hakimi, nor after the injury suffered by Jamal Musiala. There was complete silence.
This is football, and unfortunately, serious injuries can happen even without any malicious intent or hard tackle. Just think of what happened to Sweden’s Henrik Larsson and France’s Djibril Cissé.
Sadly, the difference in reactions only highlights a clear double standard 😮
