It's not that I don't want pro/rel in the US, but there are over 50 metro areas in this country with over a million people. It's hard to have a league with only 20 teams with a country that big, and if you aren't playing every team home and away in a season it isn't fair to have pro/rel. I think you would have to do regional leagues or something.

De La Torre is an example against everything Herc just said. He was relegated in the Eredivisie with Heracles, then just abandoned the club to move to a better club for more money. It didn't hurt him at all.

I'm not so convinced by this argument. In most European leagues with pro/rel, a majority of the clubs end up in the middle of the table, with little to play for in the final weeks of the season. In MLS, those same mid-table teams are fighting it out to make the playoffs. So while MLS may have less to play for at the bottom of the table, there is actually more on the line for the clubs in the middle.
That means there needs to be at least 2 other soccer leagues. Maybe one for smaller cities. There is a desperate itch for something to bring community together in a town like mine (Champaign-Urbana) Illinois. Which when all the college students are here we have a population of over 200k. All the sports around here are university related. The local community needs something of its own. I know this college town isn't the only one who feels that way.
im not defending mls, but not making the playoffs is kinda like relegation – you don't make the post season. And those who do make the playoffs are "promoted" to the post season. So like the wc, 4 teams are competing to get out of the group and the last 2 are "relegated" out of the tournament. Ok so again I'm not defending the system. I always thought if mls keeps the closed system, they prob have to split the season in two so that each game is very competitive for a chance to make the playoffs like liga mx (even if liga mx suffers from that from a youth level).
Across the ocean, it's life or death. Here in the greatest country on Earth, it's life, success, and in the long term- global domination. MLS is coming, and every single one of these teams in this giant league will be there.
He's not wrong. MLS is a joke compared to the worlds best leagues. So is US Soccer. We can't even fire Berhalter outright. In Europe or South America he would've been gone the next day
A potential problem with pro/rel in the US from a fan point of view is that if a team gets relegated a lot of their fans just wouldn't care about them anymore since they don't have a century of history
The MLS owners only care about their bottom line. They aren’t passionate about the sports itself. I love watching the MLS but it doesn’t matter to be honest…. each season doesn’t really matter because you can try next year. The competitive nature of MLS isn’t there.
Another thing about pro/rel is that leagues never go belly up, and teams rarely do as well. There are professional leagues in Europe in Volleyball, all kinds of women's sports, American Football leagues several decades old…all kept viable by promotion and relegation.

People in the US and MLS supporters don't realize what pro and rel mean to a club. People can lose their jobs at the stadium or take pay cuts so for some people it really is life and death
No, Promotion and Relegation does not foster competition, what it does, it entrenches the teams at the top The Manchester Uniteds, the REal Madrids, The Bayern Munichs. There is only real competition when there is parity. The NFL is a league with structural and financial parity. the only way to gain an advantage, is through better managment of the franchise and through better coaching. There is no pressure on Pro-Rel leagues to be managed well, or coached well. They will fire coaches mid season for a short term effect on the players. And Owners change so often that there is no systemic management. There is no reason to manage a franchise better, only to make it look good so you can sell it to a Mid East Billionaire and hopefully recoup what you spent to buy the team. Meanwhile The NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB all operated in the black, every single franchise made money. All of them are financially stable and will remain so into the future.
