If I knew one loss would get 3G out and a quality manager in, I would take that L in a heartbeat. Of course, we all know the likelihood of USSF having a quality replacement lined up is about 0.
I give him a C-, putting players out of position. Late subs in the 82nd in the Canada game. I can't blame the players for not performing at optimal levels when they are not in their optimal position. Greg caused the USMNT to only get 5 points by his gimmicks. This is not the gold cup nor the nations league where you have games go into extra time to make subs and fix mistakes. This is world cup qualifiers. The starting lineup needs to be optimal as much as possible every game.
GGG gets a D in my opinion. I'm tired of people giving him credit for making those subs at halftime of the Honduras game. Guess what boys and girls, his job is to put the best lineup out there. He failed miserably. So him making the changes at halftime put him at the lineup that should have been out there sans Brooks. For God sakes he had Adams at right back. His midfields are typically void of creativity, but decides against putting Reyna there. He also brought on Roldan for Pulisic vs. Kronrad. He just mismanaged the roster entirely. Please, please don't forget this…he brought in Yueill.
And you guys gave him a C b/c the players decided to show up and he didn't? The guy is an idiot and really is wasting this cycle.
He clearly gets another three games in charge and likely more now… but this guy just isn't likely to out coach most other side's coaches at the big dance a year from November, just isn't a coaching genius and is losing the players confidence with moves like Adams at RB….
Grades for Gregg… Transferred to another school by mutual agreement … in lieu of being expelled and likely encouraged to find some manual trade, say cleaning up after the elephants at the circus
I give Gregg a D. A draw at home to Canada is a loss in a way. Sure, we didn’t lose, but it’s inexcusable. The El Salvador game was disappointing, and the first half vs Honduras was awful. Then, not making any injury replacements was just baffling. Hoppe and Gioaccinhi all had secured moves prior to the El Salvador game. They really couldn’t arrive at camp a few days later? And, why didn’t Gregg bring more players in the first place? He was able to bring at least 30 if he wanted. Why couldn’t Green and LDLT come? It makes no sense.
Edit: Winger options to replace Weah

While I was never and have never been in the “I hope we lose” camp, I expected the second half of that match to continue the way the first did. And if so, I wanted GGG gone. Fortunately it didn’t and I’m glad. I’ll take being wrong and winning over being right and losing. Every. Single. Time.
If I may steel man the “I hope we lose” argument…I think lots of folks feel like after that first half, even if we came back and won by the hair on our balls, it’s just papering over the cracks; and that in the end it will, like 2018, poor performances will bite us in the ass at the most in inopportune time. I have and will always support the team to win, but I can’t say I don’t understand these folks’ side.
The hosts made a good point tho…this attitude is taking it too far. As fans we should demand accountability, but cheering for the team to lose is madness.
C+. To say that 5 points was not an expectation with 2 away games in Central America is ludicrous. We all know the old mantra and it works. "Win at home, tie on the road", do that and we will qualify with 28 points. Unfortunately, we had to deal with a really really good Canada team at home but at the end the result followed that mantra. 5 points. That is fine. Team chemistry and play will get stronger as we get closer to Qatar. US always needs time to gel and so do especially this crop of young padawans
Just once I'd like to go through a FIFA break without seemingly everyone getting injured. Weah before it, then Pulisic with Covid, then Reyna, then McKinnie acting a fool. Part of the problem is that I know all this personnel craziness is just going to drive Berhalter crazy and encourage him to over think the problem. If he could keep a first selection through a FIFA break, I think it would be good for everyone. But it seems just destined not to happen.
I give him a C. I think the players were as much of a problem as the coach; I'm not one of these fans that are like "We have so much talent that if I were coaching we'd win easily." But, until the second half of the Honduras game the coach wasn't solving the problems – and that is the coach's job. If the players don't have the right attitude and aren't executing at least some of that is on the coach. If the players aren't in the position to execute, then at the least you misevaluated them as a coach. For example, Brooks should never be asked to step up any more than Turner should be asked to play with his feet. If it has to happen during the game you cringe and cross your fingers, but you never make it the game plan.
That said, I really appreciate what you said about if you are hoping we lose you aren't a real fan. I hated Jurgen Klinsmann from the moment he was announced. I raged against him from day one. I never understood why we hired someone that had literally no other prospects. No one wanted that man to be there coach, except for some reason Sunil Gulati and a few clueless American fans that were like, "But he's from Europe! He won a World Cup!" I thought he had done enough to deserve to be fired within the first year of his tenure. I prophesied from the first day he'd destroy our program and his tenure would end in tears.
But I never hoped we'd lose. That game versus Belgium where despite all the coaching mistakes he had made up to that point we were still in it, and had a chance to repeat the 2002 run, I was rooting for the win even though I knew if he won we'd NEVER fire him no matter what. It was predictable that we lost, but I wasn't happy about it.
No more than a D. He never lines up his players to play to their strengths. His “ideas” have all been shit. The only reason US got any points at all is because of the talent and skill of the players on his squad. With a full strength squad US should have walked away with 9 points after the first 3 games. His line ups and ideas make our good players look bad. He needs to go.
When I was in college I generally got As and Bs. Then I took a biology class in which I fucked off and did shitty during the first half of the semester. I went into the final with an F and luckily pulled my final grade up to a C. I was capable of getting an A, but I was so happy just to get the C. Fucking Greg knows how I felt.
Gregg doesn't get a grade from me until after the 14th game. The only thing I want is for the USMNT to qualify top 3 finish. Until then he needs to make sure we have a full damn roster of our best players period. Great stream guys
So I love this show, fellow Indy resident. I work in motorsports w a lot of Euro guys that have gotten me into soccer, and u guys help me understand some of the subtle nuances of the sport. Thanks 👍
Berhalter is obviously not the guy to get these players to become a TEAM and get the most out of their potential. Problem is there’s no time for a decent replacement, we’re stuck. But could there just be more turmoil inside the program than we realize? Let’s just hypothesize the rumors of McKinney and a certain sister are true, and as Donovan said the damage between him and the team may be ‘beyond repair’…could all these guys actually be premadonnas and we just haven’t noticed? Yeah these guys celebrate together after goals n whatnot, but the last few games the guys seemed to hate being on the field w each other. Not much chatter other than Adams, no cohesion, no creating or improvising w each other, and not even calling out bad play. These guys either hate each other or Berhalter. And if a certain someone demanded McKinney be taken off the team because of an alleged rendezvous w a family member, has that splintered the team at all? Donovan seemed pretty clear McKinney crossed some line, and there’s NO WAY he can be that serious about just breaking COVID protocol…Just makes me wonder. 🤷♂️
I love me some Pepi and Hoppe btw! Maybe this team needs a lil more ‘eff this formation, give me the damn ball!’ attitude
“F”, he lost 5 of six total halves. Team selection is horrible and game management was atrocious, with the exception of the second half against Honduras. He shouldn’t even get credit for that second half since he was only correcting his incompetent team decisions. Berhalter needs to go.
American socer. Here is some advice. You need every playmaker you have in the squad on the pitch as much as possible. Who are these playmakers???? Pulisic, Reyna, Weah, Conrad, Weston, Aaronson, Dest and Adams. These are your most technical players. You need to have them on field as much as possible. Just my 2 cents.
I give GB a D. He had 45 minutes of decent making and 225 minutes of bad decisions. From roster selection to in game management. The El Salvador game was a perfect game to try Reyna in the middle. Not calling in a winger for Weah was poor too. Emmanuel Sabbi and Kevin Paredes, not great but serviceable. Right back with Shaq Moore and Cannon. Kyle Duncan could’ve been called in for depth at RB. He isn’t the most technical player but probably our best 1 vs 1 defender. Next window, I hope to see Pomykal and Ferreira mainly for the chemistry of having three players play together. We should have Richards but I hope Miles Robinson and Tyler Adams log less minutes.

Guess I arrived to the party a little early.
As a letter grade would give him a C. The Honduras game saves him from an F.

If Gregg says I have a crazy ideas formation the assistants coach’s should say now Gregg keep it simple 4 3 3
How do I opt out of these podcasts?
It’s like wishing your dog would die so you could get a “better” one

Clearly Greggg must be made to be afraid of losing his gig to be able to coach

He didn't replace Weah but he also only brought five midfielders which just is crazy

GUILTY! I just dislike Greggggg coaching so much 😒 however 3 points in Honduras is much more worth it, well for now 😅
El Salvador: C
Canada: C
Honduras first half: D
Honduras second half: B+
Simple Average (2+2+(1*.5)+(3.5*.5))/3 = 6.25/3 = 2.083 or a C 😛😜😝😲🙃
