England are notoriously bad at possession and controlling games in tournaments. Which is why for me we need a midfield 3 of Rice, Grealish and Foden, dropping Mount to the bench. Front 3 of Rashford, Kane, Sancho bringing the greatest diversity in attack. And then Mount becomes a good option off the bench for various reasons.
i think ben chillwell better than luke shaw. i think man utd favouritism shown here and chillwell is excellent and a winner. i expect reece james to start with back four beacause he is a better defender than walker who is just a pace.
If Mings starts we’ve genuinely got no chance
•Walker isn’t clear from James. Southgate trusts his guys, so Walker and Trippier would probs be in for a good shout, but James is at the very least at Walkers level of quality and is on much better form having beaten the former in the UCL recently. Trippier has also had a good season in La Liga and could be passed as underrated, but I don’t think he’s as good as James or Walker.
•Mings is last choice CB after his shocking play and behaviour in the previous 2 friendlies, White must be Maguires fill in.
•Henderson won’t start ahead of Bellingham or Philips no way and Roy Keane guessed correctly: he is there because he does card tricks. He’s also there because he likes to bully Calvert Lewin and Warde Prowse.
•Rashford isn’t a first choice starter. No way is he above Kane as striker and whether he is ahead of Sancho/Foden/Sterling/Grealish is up for debate. I think he is excellent but is a victim of his own versatility to play as a winger and striker.
•Shaw starting ahead of Chilwell is a far off conclusion. Ones won the UCL and has an excellent season, the other has had an excellent season but lost the Europa league final.
•Foden is fantastic- but is incredibly overrated and that needs to stop for his and England’s own good. Chance creation is behind Mount and Grealish, his tackling/interceptions/pressures led are a third of Mounts, and his goal contribution can be boiled down to being in a team with KDB and Aguero amongst others. He hasn’t started a significantly crucial amount of minutes for City, is 4th-5th in their MOTMs and has been rated at the average rate for a City player by their fan sites and local newspapers- he isn’t crucial to any team nor is he yet proven to be able to carry a team to success and lead one. Don’t hype him, he has an incredible amount of potential especially as he plays with the players he does and throwing him in the deep end with all the pressure that follows for no substantial reason is the reason why Walcott, Ox, Loftus-Cheek etc. all turned from potential stars to OAPs in their early 20s.
•Stones, Mount, Rice, Kane are the only nailed on 1st choice starters. Maguire would’ve been, but even if he’s back by then the replacement + Stone’s pairing would’ve matured and Maguire won’t have a healthy run of match fitness so he isn’t a first choice starter at any point in this tournament.
•Southgate will probs go for Pickford, but I wouldn’t rule out Henderson just yet.
•Why Lewis Dunk and Tomori aren’t in the squad is beyond me. Warde Prowse should easily have gone ahead of Henderson.
